Rodeo: A Team Roping Event

Team roping has been a successful event with the Americans. It is a battle of the best cowboys and girls who have the skills of team roping.

Team roping is a popular rodeo event mostly played by cowboys and cowgirls. This is the only rodeo event which allows men and women to compete equally even with mixed gender team members. It is also called as heading and heeling. Basically, a team is composed of two players-the header and the heeler. The header is the one who ropes the steer either on the neck or horns while the heeler is the one to rope the steer behind the legs.

This rodeo event was a technique developed by cowboys working in ranches. They used the technique in order to capture full grown animals such as cows. During the earlier years, it was just a chore. However, because of enormous interests of people, it became a popular event wherein cowboys and cowgirls compete with each other. Rodeo events usually receive large numbers of spectators.

Basically, steers are lined up inside a chute with spring doors. Each side of the chute comes with an area called box and the header is positioned in one side. A taut rope is used by the header which is called the barrier. Once the header is ready, the spring doors of the chute will be released by an assistant who allows the steer to go running.

Once the steer reaches the end of the rope, the barrier will be released and the header must rope the steer with either of the legal catches namely:

•Clean horn catch – lasso of the two horns
•Neck Catch – lasso around the neck
•Half head catch – lasso around the neck and one horn

This event requires speed and accuracy. Once the dally is made by the header, he maneuvers his horse to the left side while the steer is still running. When the heeler finds a clear way, he throws the rope and attempts to lasso the steer’s rear feet. This technique will hold the animal still. Once finished, the official will wave the flag signalling the time to stop and taking record of the time spent for the event.

A five second penalty is charged for roping only 1 leg of the steel and 10 second penalty for breaking the barrier generally called as Cowboy Speeding Ticket. In a professional level team, it usually takes only a matter of 4 to 12 seconds to complete the task. In contrast, low level teams usually take longer to finish the task.

This rodeo tournament is well recognized by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) and the International Professional Rodeo Association. Based on the standards of PRCA, the weight of the calf used must be at least 220 to 280 pounds. In addition, the animal must be strong and should not have any sickness.

Horses used in the event are usually American quarter horse. It is because these horses show strength and power to turn the steer after roping. They are also taller and heavier compared to other types of horses. American quarter horses also have the agility to move fast and to react on the riders command.

Team roping needs particular equipments in order to participate in the event. The following is the list of team roping equipments:

•Horse
•Saddle
•Bridle
•Protective boots
•Ropes
•Bale of hay with practice head
•A saw horse used to practice heeling
•A pickup truck
•A horse trailer
•Food for the horse

Team roping requires coordination and timing. These skills are very crucial in achieving your objective in the least time possible. Another important element of team roping is the effectiveness of your grip on the rope. Most team roping events use the Mexican Vaquero grip and swing. This has been adapted because in most cases, the rope’s back swing is difficult to manage with any other grip and swing.

Another essential technique in team roping is the proper body position. Correct positioning allows you to use your body to your own advantage. This is crucial because it provides you the best balance needed whenever you are roping. It will also help you advance your horse riding skills. Finally, it is highly important to have enough practice for both team members so as to develop their coordination.

Blackpool Pleasure Beach – a Century Old Family Affair

Blackpool Pleasure Beach has been welcoming families to its 42 acre site on the South Promenade for over one hundred years. You might be forgiven for thinking that, during that time, its popularity may have waned and what we are now left with is some clapped out relic of more halcyon days; a reminder of what Blackpool used to be rather than a powerful reminder of how good Blackpool still is.

For those who haven’t been in a while it’s worth remembering that Blackpool remains the most popular seaside resort in Europe. And it’s popular in so many different ways with so many different age groups that there has to be a reason for it still to be riding high when so many other British seaside towns have faded into a sad obscurity – it’s not like everybody just turns up for the chips.

Forget the sometimes negative publicity of the past few years. Blackpool has worked, and is working, hard to grow its appeal with the family again. It’s why Blackpool Tower and Circus, Blackpool Zoo, Sea Life Centre and the Sandcastle Waterworld are all so popular after facelifts over the past few years. But it’s still very much the case that even an attraction as historic and renowned as the magical Blackpool Illuminations serves only as a backdrop to Blackpool’s finest tourist attraction: the Pleasure Beach. And if you’re looking for a family weekend experience, Pleasure Beach Blackpool is still second to none.

For the family. By the family.

Pleasure Beach Blackpool has remained in the same family ownership since it first opened its doors in 1896. Perhaps that’s why Blackpool Pleasure beach, unlike any other theme park in the country, has an unrivalled range of rides that caters for toddlers, young children and families. Yes, of course Pleasure Beach has an almost inexhaustible supply of white-knuckle rides for the most fearless visitors – not least the 213 foot climb that launches millions each year onto the Big One, the UK’s tallest rollercoaster – but what makes the Pleasure Beach truly impressive, and ideal for a family weekend break, is the number of other rides it crams into its relatively small space that will appeal to just about everyone.

So here, broken down into three categories, are five Blackpool Pleasure Beach rides just for the kids, five for all the family, and five for the more adventurous to give you an idea of the variety and depth of what’s on offer, and to give you the full family experience.

Child’s play

The bulk of the children’s rides at Pleasure Beach Blackpool are centred around the Beaver Creek area of the park where your children will find something to suit just about all ages and tastes. Here’s just a sample of some of the highlights you can expect on your family experience.

Ellie’s Caterpillar – there are coin-operated rides that are suitable for children younger than 2 years old, but the starting age for any of Blackpool Pleasure Beach’s rides really is 2. And this ride is a lovely starting point for the youngest visitors (although they’ll need accompaniment if they are only 2). A swirling, bouncing, smiling caterpillar that induces vomiting in adults – but the kids just love it! An oldie-but-goody.

Beaver Creek Log Flume – trust Blackpool Pleasure Beach to create white-knuckle rides for kids. Pitched perfectly, this is a single drop log-flume for young children – and again the youngest should really be accompanied by an adult.

It is a perfect example of the Pleasure Beach doing what it does best when it comes to the family experience: scaring everybody just enough, but not too much. And why should it only be adults that get wet on rides?

Zipper Dipper – there are 12 rollercoasters at Pleasure Beach Blackpool, and two of them are situated in Beaver Creek. The Zipper Dipper is a classic ‘woody’ rollercoaster, built in 1934, with three terrific little dips to master.

Once again, adults need to ride with very young children, but this reviewer’s youngest is three and she adores this ride.

Alice in Wonderland – other parks in the UK spend the money on the ‘big’ adult rides and the kids get saddled with riding on the Ladybirds – hardly an event ride. Not so with Blackpool Pleasure Beach where some of the biggest event rides are for children. All the family will love this, but kids especially will adore climbing into a Cheshire cat and trundling off to follow Alice’s adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. Delightful.

Noah’s Ark – something else that the Blackpool Pleasure Beach rides seem to have mastered more than anyone else is the art of scaring the parents whilst the kids just carry on regardless. Noah’s Ark has been spooking grown-ups for decades whilst the kids just press on in search of the next surprise.

It’s a walk-through fun house that takes you in, out and around the titular boat. Full of twisted corridors, shaking stairways and spinning, sliding floors this is truly a family experience, not to mention the longest of Blackpool Pleasure Beach’s rides.

It does feature total darkness and strobe lighting in some sections but has proven itself suitable for children of any age with accompaniment.

Keeping it in the family

It’s with this class of ride that Blackpool Pleasure Beach stamps its authority. None of the following are overly scary, although a couple of them do have height restrictions that would prevent very young children from riding. Details are below. It’s worth noting that this, again, is just a sample and there are so many family orientated rides at the Pleasure Beach that we’d be here all day listing them. These are the rides that make the most of your Pleasure Beach tickets; try them all once and then find your family riding them again and again.

Sir Hiram Maxim’s Flying Machines

So how much of a thrill can a ride that opened in 1904 really be?

Sir Hiram Maxim was a Victorian inventor with an impressive track record – although not necessarily in fairground rides. The inventor of the portable machine gun, the silencer and carbon filaments for lightbulbs he clearly had a spare weekend once where he came up with this: a thrill ride that, 104 years later, is still thrilling.

A majestic, historic, delightful family experience that, as it cranks up to full speed, will have every member of the family holding on just that little bit tighter…

River Caves

A classic family experience. Up to seven of you can ride in the same boat that takes you on a journey around the world and through history.

I know, I know; you’re expecting naff models and a highly underwhelming ride – but Pleasure Beach does it again with a rich experience that will have you riding again and again. We particularly love the Egyptian section – surprisingly impressive!

Ghost Train – most ghost trains lack a certain something. Like ghosts, for example. But not the Ghost Train at Pleasure Beach Blackpool. This was the first ride of its type in the world to be called a ‘ghost train’ and it’s certainly earned its moniker as this one really is haunted.

Don’t believe us? Then check out season one of ‘Most Haunted’ in which Yvette Fielding, Derek Acorah and the crew scare themselves silly on this most legendary of Blackpool Pleasure Beach rides.

Of course, the ride isn’t quite as frightening now that Derek Acorah’s left, but it’s still darn good fun.

It’s a personal thing, but the general level of Scooby-Doo style scaremongering within makes this ride suitable for young, although not very young, children. And they should be accompanied by an adult.

Valhalla – We’re upping the ante a little now. You need to be 117cm tall to ride Pleasure Beach Blackpool’s amazing £15m Valhalla, but since that’s only the height of your average seven year old we’re still saying that puts Valhalla squarely in family ride territory – although it’s certainly at the more extreme end.

This is the world’s longest dark ride – you’ll be riding for over six minutes as you journey through the halls of the Norse Gods where you’ll be confronted by rooms of ice, fire and lightening – oh, and the odd steep drop. At its heart this is just a log-flume – albeit an excellent one with stunning special effects. You will be impressed. You will be amazed. You will be soaked.

The Avalanche – another ride that sits at the more extreme end of ‘family’ territory although this reviewer’s six year old rode the Avalanche on our last visit to Blackpool Pleasure Beach and then rode it another three times because she loved it so much.

Avalanche is a bobsled ride down an ‘ice’ track. No rails, no power source – only momentum throws you down the course reaching some pretty hairy speeds before you reach the bottom.

Exhilarating, thrilling and another ride likely to scare the pants off the adults rather than the kids.

Hold on tight.

Irrespective of how good the family experience is, every theme park worth its salt only becomes worth its salt through being at the cutting edge of thrill rides. That’s something that Pleasure Beach Blackpool has managed spectacularly well throughout its history and continues to this day with its latest ride: Infusion.

The following Blackpool Pleasure Beach rides are only suitable for older kids and adults, but if your children are hitting double figures, and you want a family experience that will bring you all together, then try these for starters…

Infusion – Blackpool Pleasure Beach’s latest ride: it’s an inverted, looping coaster which means your seat sits beneath the track and your legs hang free as you’re whipped around a looping, corkscrewing track suspended above water.

Take your Crocs off before you set off, ’cause they won’t be on your feet when you get back.

It’s intense, wild, and occasionally wet – and it’ll really prove a test for the whole family.

Bling – where your family gets to pretend it’s a team of crash test dummies on a day out. This is one of Pleasure Beach Blackpool’s latest rides – and it’s just awesome!

At its core it’s basically a star on a stick. Each point of the star has five seats attached to it. Each seat pivots 360°. Each point of the star does likewise. And the whole thing rotates 360° too – whilst spinning on its axis. Your family sits in their seats as every bit of the machine loops and swirls and threatens to tear them limb from limb.

Sitting next to the climb of The Big One this tends to get rather lost in the mix, but it’s one of the Pleasure Beach’s finest rides, and one that will prove a real highlight of your family weekend. Give it ago and experience the strangely thrilling sensation of feeling like your head’s in the clouds whilst your legs are in Bolivia.

The Wild Mouse – who are we to argue with Wikipedia, which says of The Wild Mouse at Pleasure Beach Blackpool: “The Wild Mouse,…opened in 1958, is one of only 3 remaining wooden Wild Mouse coasters left in the world and is held in very high regard as one of the finest and extreme examples of Wild Mouse coaster.”

Extreme? You bet ya. It looks titchy, it’s squeezed into a corner of the Pleasure Beach between the Ghost Train and the River Caves and, with its cutesy mouse-ified carts, it looks like butter wouldn’t melt. And then you get on it and spend two minutes fearing that every second on it might be your last. Seriously, this ride is a beast. Deceptive, jarring, scarily rickety and fast as something that’s very fast and mouse-like, this will be the most extreme ride your family experiences whilst at the Pleasure Beach. You have been warned.

The Big One
– still the tallest rollercoaster in the UK and the second tallest in Europe, the Pepsi Max Big One climbs 213 feet above the promenade below and then tips your family into a near vertical drop that starts one of the best coaster experiences you’ll have anywhere in the world.

The Big One opened for business in 1994 and has been scaring the wits out of visitors ever since. It dominates the Blackpool skyline; you can see it from miles away; your family weekend break just won’t be complete unless you ride the Big One.

The Grand National
– no it’s not as beefy as The Big One, it’s not close to being as scary as The Wild Mouse and it’s ancient (it opened in 1935). So why in the name of everything that goes up and down would a ride you can’t even see from within the park (most of it is hidden behind Valhalla) be frequently judged the best rollercoaster in the UK, and one of the best in the world?

Well, let’s put it another way: just how good does a ride with that many disadvantages have to be to get to be so highly praised? The answer is about as good as the mighty ‘Nash – a ride that, if your family is brave enough to give it a go, will reward it with one of the very finest coaster experiences anywhere.

And what makes it even more spectacular for a family day out is that as you enter the ride you can split your family in two. Half go left, the others right, and you’ll then find yourself racing each other as two trains compete. At certain points you’re practically close enough to high-five each other. Don’t do that though, because you’ll want to hang on to the safety bar… There are only three rides of this type left anywhere in the world, and at Pleasure Beach Blackpool you’ll be on the best.

Pleasure Beach Blackpool – your family’s next great weekend break is waiting for you…

It’s worth noting that there are no age restrictions (bar the fact you have to be over 2 years old to ride any non-coin-operated ride) on any of the rides. Blackpool Pleasure Beach tickets or wristbands allow you to ride any ride provided you’re tall enough – which means there are no tricky decisions about the types of Pleasure Beach tickets you need for your family day out. If they’re big enough to ride, they’re big enough to ride.

So all you need to decide is what’s first? Have a great day.

Between Realism and Fiction , Dege – Western Kham

Dege, Western Kham, Border with Tibet

Long before the sun rises we are up. Behind the mountains it begins to dawn, we are engulfed by the beauty of the morning.

The night had been noisy, with Tibetan lemurs rummaging overhead in the double wooden ceiling, sleeping was difficult. Where we sleep, kitchen, hall and bedroom in one, the typical Tibetan house. Throughout the night I carried a flashlight to spot the noisy little creatures who were after the Chambar, the rye flour stored in the kitchen in a wooden box.

The breakfast is painstakingly prepared with Chambar, salted tea and yak butter, yak cheese, mingled in a cup and bare fingers. The hospitality of the Tibetan people has no equivalent, we are honored guests in their house, and dare not to refuse their persuasive welcome.

Red Tibetan furniture all around us, wooden tables, an open kitchen furnace, we sit on our bed eating and drinking the salted Lapsang, planning for the day. We will ascend to the mountains staying overnight , where wolves and bears still roam freely. As a result, every Tibetan carries a dagger, richly decorated with Silver and gemstones, according to his social standing.

A car takes us to the school where Mr. Chen’s wife is teaching Tibetan kids, in a scenic settlement 30 miles outside the city of Dege. We visit the school, its basic facilities and see only smiling, curious faces. Horses were called in the day before to carry me to the mountain, an almost impossible thought to bear. The means of communication is by word to mouth, as no transport other than by foot or horse can reach to this remote parts in 4000 m altitude.

We start our ascent at 0900 AM and the breathtaking beauty of the valley immediately takes me into a trance. My guide’s pace is fast, difficult to follow pace, I grasp for air in such high altitude. Alpine meadows on our way, tall yellow and purple cowslips along the trails, in the mountain meadows make me remember my own heritage. So similar is the vegetation here, I almost forget I am 8000 Miles from home in a far away location.

The trail is steep, the first plateau reached we stare at the mountains around us, the valley below, fields of rye in golden yellow. The main route to Chamda and to Lhasa, a 5 days journey by car. So vast are the distances here, one needs to shut off his sensing of time entirely for the duration of this journey. Time has no meaning, we are only temporary on this Earth.. Tibetan wisdom comes in many shapes.

The stream we now try to cross is covering the trail over hundreds of meters and we attempt to jump from stone to stone with limited success. Ice cold fresh mountain spring water, a definite substitute to the bottled water in PET packing. Prayer flags with diverse colors line the places where the water is deep, marking the auspiciousness of the location. Mountains and cliffs towering over our heads as we progress into the high altitude dwelling place of my guide’s grandparents. Eagles cry, circling above in the clear blue sky, looking for prey.

An hour into the walk we meet our horses, sent to take us on horseback to our destination. I chose not to ride and pack our luggage on the horseback, a white mare. Noticing the rider’s pregnancy I wonder how strong these people must be, living year in year out in such remoteness. No medical facilities, totally dependent on Tibetan Traditional Healing, easier in the summer months, unimaginable in winter when ice and snow cover the mountains.

A two and half hour ride on horseback, she immediately sets off to return back to her home. Astonishing endurance, strength, people here are robust like no other. I encounter the first Edelweiss on my trip, it makes me forget the strain on my body, for too long I was out of practice since leaving my home country. Recalling my Military training, Hauptmann Lukesch, and the 50 Miles we marched in Alpine regions, I think back and realize how time has passed so quickly.

Here in this region I find a variety of plants, wild fruits, Gooseberries, wild Strawberries, Raspberries in deep red growing nearby. Reminding me of my youth and the Alpine world I grew up with, where we would roam in the meadows after school, using the mountains as a playground, once again I see reflections of my early days appearing with every step I climb these trails.

We zigzag along the rocky paths, it takes all my strength for its steepness. The higher we reach the more spectacular the views, the more you feel yourself free. Only a mountaineer can understand this feeling, perhaps I felt a similar sensation the night I found myself in Beyla, Guinea.

The serpentine paths become more steep, walking dangerously close near to cliffs I realize I made a good choice not to move on horseback. Not being a good rider it would have been too risky, a reckless idea I contemplate.

Well into the afternoon, long overdue we reach the first house on a long stretch of green, rye growing up in this altitude of 4000 meters. We set of at 3000 meters, but the ascent was so strenuous it took me 8 hours to climb. Here in the mountains everyone knows each other, so our arrival had been heralded and we are invited to the first dwelling we see.

Sitting in the dark kitchen with only basic amenities, the lady of the house and her grandson invites me with the same hospitality I am so used to since coming to these parts. All I take is some fresh mountain spring water, trying hard to recover from the climb.

One can not describe the condition of this dwelling place, were it not to hurt the genuine people’s feelings. All they have is this, and this is their life. The rye gives them food throughout the year, and represents their staple diet. All houses in Tibetan tradition are built of raw timber, logs of Fir and are painted with a red mixture that contains yak butter. The yak butter helps to preserve the logs for a long period of time. When entering these parts one immediately notices this phenomena without realizing the deeper meaning of it.

I dread to climb further up and really push myself to reach the last 300 meters where the grandfather is anxiously awaiting us. We can see the house further up the mountain and can see the grandfather standing and looking towards us.

The last stretch lasts forever and I take a rest every now and then, grasping for air. When we finally reach, I feel totally exhausted.

Warburton Rail Trail – Yarra Valley

With summer here, now is the perfect time to escape Melbourne and enjoy what has affectionately become known as the ‘Warby Trail’.

The Warburton trail starts at the northern end of the Lilydale Train Station car park with signposts marking the beginning of the trail. From here the only real point of confusion is when the trail meets the Maroondah Highway. The trail rejoins directly opposite and whilst a footbridge will be built over the highway in 2010, for now users have to scramble across the six lanes or head to the crossing north or south on the highway.

The first stage of the ride involves a very gradual 125m climb over 6.9km to Mt Evelyn. The fact that this is the most challenging aspect of the whole trail is testament to how perfect this ride is suited to even the most novice rider.

For those squirming at the idea of riding 40km in the saddle, a growing number of riders are choosing to begin their ride at Mt Evelyn where there is plenty of parking available and the attraction of the Cog Bike Cafe see http://www.dotheyarravalley.com.au for more information.

Most regular “Warby Trail” users agree, that the trail really comes into its own from Killara Station onwards. Its here along the Valley floor that the land and views start to open up around you. The gorgeous mountains of the Yarra Ranges National Park including Mount Donna Buang provide the perfect backdrop and motivation to keep you pushing the pedals all the way to Warburton.

If you have a bike then you should get on it and ride the Warburton Trail as soon as you can. Its a must do attraction in the Yarra Valley, its free, its beautiful, and its good for you. There’s not too many things you can say that about nowadays!

For more information and to check out some fantastic photos of this gorgeous region please visit http://www.dotheyarravalley.com.au

Mini Cooking

No house would be perfect without food in the cupboard or a spread on the table, and a dollhouse is no different. To actually create the impression of a tiny world, food is a prerequisite, and making small food precisely for the purpose of a dollhouse is a popular past time for many adults and children.

Now, you could have read that and had visions of making an attempt to fry a small portion of egg in a frying pan, but fear not. The concept is simply to create things that look like food, not essentially edible mini meals itself – even for the most dedicated dollhouse enthusiast that would be taking things a little far! Instead, making food for a dollhouse is no different a technique to making a chair or a rug. Cooking for a dollhouse gives the entire creation a new edge, and it needn’t be as hard as you may imagine.

The options for small dollhouse food are, quite simply, unending. If you have a particularly ornate and and historic dollhouse, perhaps even a traditional Victorian set up, then perhaps something like a tea and cake party is appropriate. Or perhaps you would like to add a fruit bowl to complete off the look of a dining suite, or maybe small tins to put in cupboards. The chances are endless; all you need is a little patience and a willingness to pass some time perfecting the look.

If you like a challenge, then the cake party scene is an ideal place to start. It also has the advantageous of never being officially finished; you can keep adding to it as your talents improve. The goal is to form little cakes to go on any china dishes you could have, that will show off the entire dollhouse to great effect.

This may be in the shape of an actual, full size item to work from ; this could give you an idea of the shape and look you are trying to recreate, even tho in a smaller size. If you have seen an extremely beautiful cake, you will find a picture and attempt to repeat it precisely – this is massively preferable to making an attempt to work from memory, as this is where errors can occur.

There are several reasons for polymer clays enduring role in making small food ; it is durable, easy to use, simple to find and purchase, simple to work with and it comes in a variety of colors. It is possible to construct a whole cake – including sponge base, icing and finishing touches – using nothing but polymer clay. It is from this most useful of materials that the majority of small food is formed, and for excellent reasons ; it also gives a very lifelike finish to whatever you make.

With a little time and patience, a good quantity of polymer clay and some real life inspiration to work from, soon miniature food fit for a king will be served.

And for brightening up your real table, use nora fleming decorative china dishes.

Depression On Marketing

INTRODUCTION:

Depression is a phenomenon of decreasing demand for raw materials, products, and services. For example, in the United States a recession is said to exist when the gross national product (GNP) declines for two consecutive quarters, or when the leading economic indicators (LEIs) decline for three straight months, or when the index of the Association of Purchasing Managers dips below 50 points. Whichever the case, recession requires marketing managers to modify their marketing strategy and action in order to stay both profitable and consumer-responsive. This generally means adapting the marketing mix and/or changing the target markets.

DEFINITION:

Recession has been defined in the marketing literature as a “process of decreasing demand for raw materials, products and services, including labor” (Sharma 1978) or as a “state in which the demand for a product is less than its former level” (Kotler 1973).

COMPANIES AFFECTED AND UNAFFECTED:

Recessions are selective. Recessions impact some industries, products and regions of the country hard and bypass others entirely. Among the industries and products most affected are: automobiles, home furnishings, large appliances, travel and airlines, convenience foods, aluminum, steel, petrochemicals and synthetic fibers. Relatively unaffected are: liquor and wine, tobacco, small appliances, packaged goods, computer and service industries.

Companies that are Selling Basic Necessities Survive a Recession.

In particular, companies that manufacture the basic necessities of life are least affected by the recession. People still need to eat, wash their laundry, clean their homes, practice personal hygiene, and feed their pets. Discount giants such as BJs, Costco, and Aldi continue to open their doors week after week as consumers arrive to purchase necessities and simple pleasures. Discount stores such as Wal-Mart, Kmart, Kohls, Target, and discount pet stores continue to sell to loyal customers as well as new ones looking for less expensive goods than they are used to buying. Company health care giants such as Johnson & Johnson continue to see profits despite the economic downturn. Likewise, companies producing articles for daily use such as Procter & Gamble and Kraft Foods also carry on without experiencing too much of a pinch in their sales quotas. Fast food restaurants also continue to hold strong ground against the effects of the recession as more and more people opt for a less expensivemealout.

Companies that Sell Simple Pleasures Survive a Recession

Discretionary types of spending that are the first to be given up include expensive meals or nights out on the town. In turn, the alternatives that people select to replace these activities are going to experience a surge of increased consumerism. So, as more and more people stay home to save on gas  while avoiding big ticket expenses, companies selling computer hardware and peripherals, basic needs, and simple pleasures are holding their own.

Companies selling the simple pleasures in life, also referred to as guilty pleasures or sin stocks, will continue to do well as many consumers attempt to keep their spending habits under control with small indulgences. These simple pleasures include such items as gourmet chocolates, beer, alcohol, cigarettes, DVDs, CDs, and video games.

Since parents aim to keep their children happy, even in times of economic trouble, toys will continue to be another big seller.

HOUSING BUBBLE

UK house prices between 1975 and 2006.

The Economist magazine, writing at the same time, went further, saying “the worldwide rise in house prices is the biggest bubble in history”. Real estate bubbles are followed by a price decrease (also known as a housing price crash) that can result in many owners holding negative equity (a mortgage debt higher than the current value of the property).

ADVERTISING AND THE OPPORTUNITIES

The question of advertising during a recession is one that has been asked many times over many years. Interestingly, the answer still does not seem clear to enough marketers.

The answer to the question is that advertising during a recession provides a unique window of opportunity for investment purposes to:

1) Build equity         2) Solidify your customer base           3) Gain new customers and

4) Make inroads on your competitors who have cut their advertising during the recession period. This window of opportunity is created by the understanding that advertising is an investment, not an expense.

Companies that have taken advantage of advertising during a recession to establish strong market positions while developing brand equity include such diverse company names as Bristol Myers, Campbell Soup, Coca-cola, Gillette, Nabisco, Pillsbury, Procter and Gamble, R.J. Reynolds, Rubbermaid, Levi Strauss, Stroh Brewery, United Airlines and Welsh Foods-among others.

McGraw-Hill Research study of over 600 Businesses found that:

1981-1982 …. Business that maintained or increased their ad spend during this time

* Averaged higher sales growth during the recession and in the following 3 years! By 1985 …. Sales of the businesses that maintained or increased their ad spend during that recession
* Sales had risen 256% over those that had cut back on advertising
Likewise in 2001 …. Another study found that aggressive recession advertisers
* Increased market share 2 ½ times the average for all businesses in the post-recession

In 2002 …. The Strategic planning institute illustrated that during economic expansion

INDIAN SITUATION:

The official estimates of GDP growth for the first two quarters of 2008/9 stayed above 7.5 percent. However, industry-wide indications after September are uniformly gloomy.

There are reports of significant declines in output of automobiles, commercial vehicles, steel, textiles, petrochemicals, construction, real estate, finance, retail activity and many other sectors. Exports fell by 12 percent in dollar terms in October and advance information points to a similar decline in November. After September, the economy seems almost to have gone over a cliff.

COMMODITY BOOM

Brent barrel petroleum spot prices, May 1987 – March 2009.

In January 2008, oil prices surpassed $100 a barrel for the first time, the first of many price milestones to be passed in the course of the year. In July 2008, oil peaked at $147.30 a barrel and a gallon of gasoline  was more than $4 across most of the U.S.A. These high prices caused a dramatic drop in demand and prices fell below $35 a barrel at the end of 2008. There is concern that if the economy was to improve, oil prices might return to pre-recession levels.

In the second half of 2008, the prices of most commodities fell dramatically on expectations of diminished demand in a world recession.

RELATIONSHIP IN CRISIS

Consumers feel somehow abandoned by big brands. In a way they feel brands are indifferent to their situation and don’t do anything for them. Comparing the period of Jan/Nov 99 with Jan/Nov 98, prices in supermarkets went down by an average of 5%.            During the recession all supermarkets, despite their positioning, base their communication on price and, compared to FMCG categories, increase their ad spending.
