How To Make Money Selling Your Equestrian e-Book

Why write an equestrian e-book?

Equestrians are always eager to earn extra money to spend on their horses or on riding. Horse riders would all like to find a way to do so that doesn’t involve a large time or financial investment . On the internet, one of the easiest ways to sell your equestrian experience and insight is by writing an equestrian e-book. You may think that

-You cannot write, and never could, your grammar and spelling is terrible

-You know nothing worthwhile that you could possibly write about

-What you do know no one will want to hear about and certainly will never pay for

-You know too little about the internet and computers to publish anything, never mind an e-book.

How to find the time and energy to write an e-book

These are all very valid objections. Your average equestrian rarely have the time to become an internet expert. That is probably why there is such a limited amount of personal-equestrian-experience e-books on the internet market. This means there is a huge market for your e-book and a lot of potential for you to earn some money, sitting comfortably in an armchair in font of your computer. All you need to do is to overcome your limiting beliefs about your writing abilities.

Writing an equestrian e-book is very easy

It is crucial to understand that:

a.You do not have to be an accomplished author to write an equestrian e-book. E-books are written in everyday horse people language and they do not go on for ever either. You can usually get your message across in 20-60 pages. You will be surprised how quickly you get to 60 page when you are writing about something you feel passionate about.

b.You do not need to know everything about the internet or computers to write an e-book, nor will it cost a lot of money or take a lot of time.

c.You can write an e-book about any of the following and earn some money in the process:

1. Equestrian Holidays
2. Your favorite horse breed
3. Reviews of books you read, fiction or non-fiction
4. How to find a good riding instructor/ livery stables/farrier
5. Where on th internet one can find more info about horse nutrition
6. The best horse forum/ horse blogs
7. How to take the perfect horse photo
8. Where on the internet to find th best riding gear/tack
9. Horse names
10. Your favorite horse shows
11. How to groom a horse before a competition
12. A true horse story

The hardest part of writing an e-book is getting the knowledge out of your head and onto the paper or onto the computer screen. Even this can be simplified if you follow a suitable framework. Most people start with a lot of enthusiasm, but never finish; they give up before they get half-way. The secret of writing a useful e-book is to start with the end in mind, to stick to the point and always keep your reader in mind.

In fact, the easiest way to go about it is to write as if you are explaining something about horses or riding to one of your best friends. Some writers record their thoughts by talking to a Dictaphone and later transcribing their ideas.

There are a lot of sites on the net that will teach you how to write and publish e-books. Find one that is equestrian-friendly and start writing.

Top 5 Horse Riding Holiday Destinations

5. Horse Riding Holiday Cheshire, UK

What with the so called “Credit Crunch” and our nation’s economic instability, people feel as if they have to look after all the money that they have, and even the notion of going on a luxury holiday may seem ridiculous, but have no fear, there is the perfect remedy to this irritating problem. Some of the world’s finest riding opportunities can be found right here at home in the UK, so whether you’re an experienced rider or you just think that it looks like fun, there is always a fantastic holiday available, at a very reasonable price. Cheshire is home to beautiful woodlands and scenic riding trails that run through some of the most picturesque scenery that the UK has to offer, and if that’s not enough,  Equestrian Escapes even offers a “Horses and Chocolate” package, in which you can ride to your hearts content and then indulge in heavenly home made truffles!

4. Trail ride and training in Spain

Epona Equestrian Centre, located just 20 minute from Seville airport, is based within the walls of a stunning 16th century Hacienda. Here you will find over 65 horses and ponies, a vast array of stables and horse arenas, as well as an outdoor swimming pool, comfortable bed rooms with all the modern facilities and an enormous scenic garden. The fantastic thing about this holiday is that it contains a huge variety of activities to take part in, such as hacking through wonderful olive groves and eucalyptus trees, watching fantastic riding demonstrations at The Royal Riding School in Jerez, as well as benefiting from the professional lessons that are available from the Epona staff. The difference between Epona and many other holiday resorts that offer horse riding is that Epona is designed for genuine equestrian enthusiast, not just tourists who fancy a bit of riding in the sun.

3. Ride Lusitano Horses in Portugal

If your idea of a perfect holiday is to sit back, relax and just enjoy the sun, then this holiday probably isn’t for you, but if you get your kicks from partaking in wonderful riding opportunities, in an area of extreme natural beauty, surrounded by likeminded people then you’ve found your perfect holiday! The equestrian centre is home to Nuno Baptista, a national horse riding judge, member of the Portugal national dressage team and head instructor at the centre, who will be available to give you pointers on your riding, and for the more adventurous of you, he can even teach you how to drive a traditional Portuguese horse carriage. If fast paced thrills aren’t your idea of a good time, then various scenic hacks through the beautiful Portuguese cork and olive trees that surround the equestrian centre are available. All of the horses here are pure bred Lusitanos, which means that they are bred and trained to the highest standard for your riding pleasure. The equestrian centre is also home to many fantastic facilities, including an indoor arena and an Olympic sized outdoor arena, so if you take your horse riding as seriously as you take your relaxing, then this is the perfect holiday for you!

2. Horse Riding on the beach in Spain

Needless to say, riding a beautiful horse across a sunlit Spanish beach, sitting in a hugely comfortable traditional Spanish saddle is an experience that is very hard to top. Galloping across a beautiful, deserted Tarifa beach, with the salty air flowing through my horses’ mane is definitely an experience that will stay with me for the rest of my life. Tarifa is a lovely little town, which is made wonderfully accessible by being located close to Malaga, Jerez and Gibraltar, and it is home to some of the finest riding and dining that Spain has to offer. The fact that large areas of Tarifa are designated as National Park means that the scenery and wildlife are largely unspoiled, as if they have been saved there especially for your pleasure. Tarifa is also home to some of the most unique riding experiences available in Spain, such as a fantastic ride across sand dunes and through cork forests to reach the hidden town of Paloma Baja, an area almost completely unknown to tourists. If that hasn’t convinced you enough, then you will be pleased to learn that there are many other activities available in this wonderful area of Andalucia, such as windsurfing lessons, kite surfing lessons, whale watching and even a day trip to Africa!

1. Horses and Italian Castles

What could be better than fabulous riding opportunities, good food, fine wine and the fantastic surroundings of a 16 century castle? In my opinion there isn’t an equestrian holiday available that sounds more appealing than equestrian-escapes “Italian castle hideaway break”. As you may have already guessed, your lodgings for the duration of your stay are not a bog standard hotel in the middle of a busy town; you will be staying at a breathtaking Italian castle, located in a wonderful area of the Italian countryside an hour and a half from Rome. The riding trails that are chosen are both hugely scenic and historic, and they take you through beautiful old farming areas, alongside amazing volcanic lakes and through stunning towns, such as the fortified village of Orano. If staying in a castle doesn’t quench your thirst for historical masterpieces, then you can also take up the opportunity of exploring the remains of an ancient Etruscan village in the nearby vicinity. Despite this busy schedule, you will still have plenty of time to relax by the pool, and indulge in the local delicacies, such as fine cheeses and wines, which in my opinion makes this holiday the perfect equestrian getaway for any rider, young or old!

How to be a good Goldendoodle Parent

Okay. We’ve seen it time and time again where people will obtain a new family pet and have no clue as to how to raise it or to be a good parent to it. Here’s the key to successful Goldendoodle parenting: START YOUR GOLDENDOODLE’S LIFE OFF ON THE RIGHT PAW!!

Yep! It’s that simple!

When you first obtain your brand new Goldendoodle…regardless of age…they are a newcomer! They are a brand new family member. They don’t know the rules yet of your family. They don’t know the bounderies or what limits you have set up for them. This precious new family member has no idea it is not allowed to sit on your furniture…hop on your bed…where is has to sleep…what it is allowed to eat and when… People have a tendency to forget that bringing a new pet…Goldendoodle or otherwise…into their home is very much like bringing a baby home for the first time. Dogs can not speak! Not in language that you understand…yet. Just as babies have to learn how to get their message across to its parents, your Goldendoodle has to learn how to communicate with you so that he or she can get their needs, wants and desires known to you. Like becoming a parent for the very first time, sure there are plenty of wonderful baby books out there….but it is up to the parents to implement what they have read or try a few new things on their own. So too, for the new Goldendoodle owner.

You bring your new Goldendoodle puppy or dog home and with wagging tail, they look up at you with those adoring eyes and potty right in front of you. What did they do wrong? Their pleading eyes don’t understand why you are upset. Your puppy has had an “accident”. But to them, your puppy did what comes natural. Simply squatting or lifting its leg to urinate or to do the other. Your puppy keeps you up all night long in the beginning, howling and crying its head off. The anxious, inexperienced parent will believe the dog has “social anxiety disorders”. An experienced parent who has been around the block a few times with new “children” understand that their puppy is just upset because it is trying to learn the new rules and is using crying and howling as a communicative tool to get its’ new mommy or daddy’s attention. After all, your Goldendoodle can not yell, “HEY YOU THERE!!! LET ME OUT AND GIVE ME SOME LOVIN’!!”. Wouldn’t that be nice?

Suddenly, the realities of becoming a new puppy or dog owner has become evident! Your ideal Goldendoodle has shattered your illusions. Now what? You have all the essentials you thought you had for becoming a new doodle parent. After all, you did just splurge on a new crate, food bowls, dog food, toys, grooming essentials and all the things your breeder and the pet store assistant told you that you would need as a new Goldendoodle owner. You may have even purchased a few dog books…but now what? How do you now implement these things to help you, the new Goldendoodle owner, become a good parent? Will you be able to ever housebreak your new Goldendoodle? Will you be able to set boundaries for your new lovable family member? How will you raise your “new child” ? These are all questions that will probably give you a huge headache as they race through your mind the first few weeks of obtaining your new Goldendoodle if you are an inexperienced dog person and have never owned a pet before. But don’t fret! You can be a good parent and you must calm down, relax and take a deep breath. Puppyhood will pass before you know it!

Canine age entirely faster than humans. If you understand that owning a Goldendoodle is entirely more than loading up on tons of canine paraphernalia; understand what your primary responsibilities as a Goldendoodle parent is to provide your new pet shelter, food, love, good nutrition and proper guidance…then you will be just fine. You can read all the books in the world and you can call your friends and the breeder hundreds of times in a day. It will all eventually boil down to one thing and that is YOU…the parent…taking full responsibility and taking the reins to show your new doodle the way. In order for your Goldendoodle family member to become a happy, healthy, well adjusted pet, you must be patient, loving and disciplined. You and the other family members can help your doodle become a winning team if you understand the basics of canine ownership. Your Goldendoodle will provide you with unconditional love like no human can. But they can only provide this type of love if you do not raise your doodle with anxiety, yelling, hitting or negative training.

Goldendoodles are very sensitive dogs. They are dependent dogs. They need you probably more than you need him or her. Dogs of all ages must have rules and guidance. As a good parent, it is up to you to provide this for your new Goldendoodle family member. Just when you thought you had your home entirely dog proof, your intelligent Goldendoodle will discover something new to either chew on, dig up, get into or play with. If the item is within reach or on the ground, your Goldendoodle will more than likely find it. They are very curious like most dogs are. It is incredible what dogs can fit into their mouths. You would be very surprised. So supervision is a must until your doodle understands the rules of the game. Young puppies are like vacuum cleaners! Everything and anything can go into their mouth if it is within reach or on the ground! Carefully examine, especially if youhave young children, your home and analyze every aspect of your lifestyle. Are you or your children in the habit of leaving toys, food, small items laying around on the floor or coffee tables or on low lying furniture?

Remember what you did as a parent to your children. Just as you had to ensure sharp items or even items that could be deemed dangerous for a curious child, you must puppyproof your home for your new Goldendoodle. You must look through the eyes of your canine. Learn where the dangerous places may be within your home. Like children, your Goldendoodle will look at a loose object as well as your couch, carpet or other furniture as something that should go inside its mouth. Be it sock, shoe, shoe-lace, snack, toy…..the item will be very enticing and inviting for your doodle. Unless you set boundaries and rules and supervise, your new Goldendoodle will get into anything and everything. It’s what dogs do. It isn’t the breeder’s fault. It’s the natural order for a dog. Learn what is deadly to dogs; Understand that whatever is convenient for a dog….they will do it. Dogs, unfortunately, have no common sense. They act and react. You, the human, have a much larger brain so that you can understand things. Dogs are intelligent, but they are, after all, dogs. Raising your new Goldendoodle takes time. How long did it take to raise your child? Dog do not live as long as humans. Raising a Goldendoodle is a lifetime event just as raising your child is a lifetime event…it is only shorter for the doodle.

Things get better over time. Your child did not enter your family and instantly understand the rules. He or she did not instantly understand how to communicate. Your child did not instantly learn how to walk, function, behave or act like a respectable person. Neither will a dog be able to do these things. Everything takes time. Unless you understand that being a new Goldendoodle owner takes time, patience and lots of love, you will not be a good parent. You will raise a very distraught, uncooperating doodle. Join an obedience class as soon as possible! If you have never owned a pet before and you do not have the time to incorporate training, do not bring home a canine, regardless of breed. If you are anxious, fearful, doubtful and a bit on the neurotic side, these emotions will transfer to your new pet instantaneous.

Parents need to keep their emotions, fears and anxieties in check otherwise whether child or pet, you will transfer these negative emotions towards them. Just like your baby, your Goldendoodle can’t get enough kissing and cuddling and positive affection. Spend as much time with your new Goldendoodle as possible so that bonding can begin immediately. Your Goldendoodle will completely enjoy your attention, affection, the tumbling, tugging and romping. You are your new Goldendoodle’s world and if allowed, they will not let you forget it.

The Antediluvian Andalusian – An Ancient And Aspiring Horse

The Andalusian horse is one of the oldest pure horse breeds in the world. It has been highly regarded since the Middle Ages and reigned for several centuries as the embodiment of perfection, but Spanish horses have always been esteemed for their quality and appearance since Roman times.

The Andalusian has officially been known as the Purebred Spanish Horse, and has been represented by Iberian Saddle Horse, Iberian War Horse, Jennet, Ginete, Lusitano, Alter Real, Carthusian, Spanish Horse, Portuguese, Peninsular, Castilian, Extremeno, Villanos, Zapata, and Zamaranos. It is also known as the Lusitano Horse, which is the modern breed of Andalusian in Portugal. And since black is a rare color in the Andalusian breed, there is also a black Spanish Andalusian or Pura Raza Espanola (PRE) horse of Spain.

The Andalusian Horse originated in the province of Andalusia on the Iberian Peninsula, in Spain, where 2500 year old cave paintings portray the breed. Its ancestors are the Iberian horses of Spain and Portugal, which in turn were influenced by Celtic, Carthaginian, Germanic, and Roman horses; and the Barb horse which was brought to Spain by the invading Moors in the Seventh Century. These oriental horses were crossed with quality native Spanish stock, and the result was the Andalusian.

The Andalusian has been a major part of the development of many other horse breeds, including being the foundation breed for the Lipizzaner horses used in Vienna’s Spanish Riding School in the 1500′s. The breed has also been part of the development of the Irish Connemara, most German warmblood breeds, the Cleveland Bay of England, and the Peruvian Paso of the new world. The Azteca is an Andalusian/Quarter Horse cross while the Iberian Warmblood is an Andalusian/Thoroughbred cross. The Spanish Norman is an Andalusian/Percheron cross and the Hispano Arab is an Andalusian/Arab cross.

The Andalusian is mentioned in various historical texts dating as far back as Homer’s Iliad, written in 1100 BC. Xenophon, a Greek cavalry officer who lived in or near 450 BC, also praised the “gifted Iberian horses” for their role in the Spartan’s defeat of Athens. In the Second Punic War (218-201 BC), the Romans were defeated by the Iberian cavalry, and more than 1,200 years later William the Conqueror rode an Iberian horse into the Battle of Hastings in 1066. The Spanish explorer, Hernando Cortes, brought Andalusians to America for his conquests.

As the middle ages progressed, heavier breeds of horses that were capable of carrying fully armored knights began to gain favor over the Adalusian as war mounts. When firearms were invented, a more agile horse became desirable, and the Andalusion was again back in favor. This new type of warfare ushered in a new era for the breed, when it became known as the “royal horse of Europe.” During this period, Andalusian horses were present at nearly every European court as the favored mount for the nobles and played an integral role in the new riding academies that were forming throughout Europe, where the art of dressage. The Andalusian is still used in bull fighting in Southern Spain.

Andalusian horses owe a great deal to the Carthusian Monks who bred them, beginning in the late Middle Ages. In the late 1400′s, studs and bloodlines were founded at monasteries in Terez, Seville, and Cazallo. The monks were excellent breeders and trainers, and kept their horses pure. However, that purity was threatened in the 1800′s when Napoleon invaded Spain and his army stole many horses. This caused the Andalusian breed to decline in numbers and it came close to extinction. Fortunately, one herd of Andalusians was hidden and was used to renew the breed. In 1832, an epidemic devastated Spain’s horse population and only a small herd of Andalusians at the Monastery of Cartuja survived. In order to re-establish their breeding programs, exportation of an Andalusian became illegal without Royal consent and the penalty for exporting this treasured horse was death. No Andalusians were exported until 1962.

However, now the Andalusian’s numbers are growing around the world. In 2005 there were approximately 400 Andalusians registered in Canada. In the United States, it is still a unique breed, but the population has risen to around 5400 horses. The total number of Andalusian (Lusitano) horses registered with IALHA in 2008 is approximately. 11,000.
In physical appearance, the Andalusian is a compact horse with a distinguished appearance and excellent proportions which balance well with their graceful, yet substantial bodies. The Andalusian has a natural balance, collection, impulsion, and agility. They are between 15.1 to 16.1 hands high with the average being 15.2 hands.

The Andalusian is known for its abundantly thick mane that flows from a long, elegant, well-arched but substantial neck, with stallions having more of a crest than mares. The classic profile is a long head with broad forehead, small ears, large eyes, and a flat or slightly convex nose. The shoulders are well-sloped and the withers are well defined. The massive chest and powerful hindquarters are lean and the long, thick, flowing tail should be low set. The breed has strong, medium legs with very energetic high knee action and short striding.

Approximately 80% of the Andalusians are Gray, (Torca, Ruca), 15% Bay (Castana, Castanha), and 5% black. The following colors are also acceptable but rarely seen: Black Bay, Brown, Chestnut, Buckskin, Dun, Palomino, Cremello (Isabella), Perlino, Roan. Other colors are rare or believed to be non-existent in the purebred Andalusian but may be accepted with proper documentation including parentage verification and photos. All dark spots within white markings or on pink skin must be recorded on the registration application for and the color of all hooves must be noted especially if they are striped.

Andalusian Horses possess a proud but docile, calm temperament. The breed is renowned for its ability to learn quickly and easily when treated with respect. They are sensitive, intelligent, and particularly responsive and cooperative with a very willing nature.

The International Andalusian & Lusitano Horse Association is the association that maintains a registry for Purebred Andalusians and Half-Andalusians and is also the official representative of the Lusitano Horse (the modern breed of Andalusian in Portugal) in the USA and Canada.

As for genetic anomalies, veterinarians do not yet know if Degenerative Suspensory Ligament Desmitis (DSLD) has its roots in genetics, overuse of affected limbs, hormone fluctuations (previously-sound broodmares may develop symptoms of DSLD around foaling time), or if it is some combination of these factors. Although the condition is probably best known in gaited breeds (American Saddlebreds, Peruvian Pasos, Peruvian crosses, Standardbreds, and National Show Horses), it has also been diagnosed in Arabians, Thoroughbreds, and Andalusians.

But all that aside, this versatile breed can be found competing in dressage, driving, jumping, cutting and cattle work. It is ridden under both English and Western saddle. Their stunning presence and charisma makes them an asset to any show ring, exhibition or parade. With its love of people, the Andalusian is an ideal family horse.

What Horse Supplies Do I Need To Enjoy Riding?

If wishes were horses, then beggars would ride. Or so the old saying goes. However, wishes were horses but not horse supplies as well, then the beggars in question would not be riding.

To begin with, anyone who wishes to ride a horse, will need horse supplies in the form of tack. Even the roughest rider who enjoys bareback riding will require a bridle, and most of us would prefer to have a saddle between us and the horse’s spine.

Most saddlers will stock a variety of bridles and saddles, along with a selection of different types of bit, depending on the needs of you and your horse. Other tack items available at a good retailer of horse supplies should include halters, cruppers and breastplates. Other horse supplies are more concerned with the horse’s comfort and well-being.

A horse kept stabled will require good quality food, ranging from the traditional hay and oats to more modern pellets and grain mixes. Racehorses and show horses in particular will require very high quality, high energy feed and supplements in order to perform at their peak.

A horse kept outdoors in pasture will also require hay and other feed supplements, especially over winter. A horse kept in pasture will also require a cover to protect it from the elements, and occasionally an additional neck rug.

Even if you are using your horse for everyday hacking rather than competitions, you will still require a few more items in the way of horse supplies. Grooming is a pleasure for both horse and rider, and for this you will require a body brush or dandy brush at the very least.

A hoofpick is also a vital piece of equipment in order to ensure that your horse’s hooves are in good condition and to make sure that the sensitive frog of the hoof is not being damaged by stones or other hard objects.

If you choose to leave your horse “barefoot”, you will still need to care for your horse’s hooves, which sometimes means filing them – which in turn means a specialized file. Stables and fields alike need to be kept clean from droppings, so a good set of implements such as a shovel, a rake and a wheelbarrow are vital, although you do not need to buy these at a specialist horse supplies retailer – any good garden or hardware shop should stock these.

If you wish to use your horse in competitions, you will need further equipment, and extra grooming equipment such as curry combs and hoof oil are just some of the items on your list. A horse trailer is vital for transporting your mount to the location of the competition.

The feet and legs of your horse will need to be protected with brushing boots and/or bandages. As turnout is an important part of many shows and gymkhanas, you will also require a collection of ribbons for braiding into the mane according to competition standards. Western riding, of course, has its own set of equipment and requirements, chief of which is the specialized Western saddle.

Other supplies could be better referred to as “people supplies.” These are the essential items for the rider. The most important of these is the hard hat or helmet, which comes in a range of styles and types, depending on your needs and any showing you hope to be doing.

Jodhpur boots are robust enough to work outdoors in or if a horse accidentally treads on your foot, but are also shaped to slide in and out of the stirrup easily – hiking boots and Wellington boots run the risk of being caught in the stirrup, which can lead to horrific consequences in the case of a fall. These items of protective clothing, plus others, can easily be bought at a good horse supplies retailer.

Bathroom decor?

This is my fiance’s bathroom ensemble he picked out for his bathroom.

http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&SKU=106507&RN=7

The towel colors he picked out are Saddle & Clover:

http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&BRN=1&SKU=113693&COL=206&RN=273

http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&BRN=1&SKU=113693&COL=556&RN=273&

My question is: There is some wall space in his bathroom – any ideas of how to decorate it that would fit with his bathroom decor and colors?

Thanks so much for your ideas! :o )
Nope – there are 2 bathrooms. I let him decorate one. I decorated the other.

I really like the decor he has chosen. For wall art, I would try to go with something that would incorporate the colors and textures. Like this….

http://www.cepolina.com/freephoto/f/eUSA.Hawaii.Maui/bamboo.jungle.plants2.jpg

I also agree with the statement prior regarding adding a little color. If you’re allowed to paint, I would possibly do a light yellow. If not, I would maybe do a wooden frame with a yellow matte.

Our Visit to the Parelli Celebration Nec Arena 2008

This year’s Parelli Celebration at the NEC was AWESOME!

Last year my gorgeous husband bought me a summer holiday to Colorado (with him of course! Who’d want to be without the man who buys such great presents?) and a ticket to the Loveland, Colorado, Parelli conference. Wahoo! And so began my love affair with Parelli and natural horsemanship began, and before I knew it …

… Twelve of us were converging on the NEC for this year’s Parelli UK conference. The Coventry Novotel was our home “pad” for a couple of nights with Pizza Hut just round the corner.

We were excited! Not only for the Parelli conference, but also for the www.adnag.co.uk launch date. I’d been dreaming of setting up a natural horse advertising website for years, and the Parelli Celebration was the best time to launch it.

www.adnag.co.uk – a cute acronym for Advertising Horses Naturally and Gorgeously was designed and ready. But was it online yet? Had I pointed my Domain to the server in time? Could we actually see it on the web? Nothing was visible on my mobile internet as we were walking towards the NEC from the car parks. U-oh! What was the point of twelve women all smartly parading www.adnag.co.uk T-shirts when there was no www.adnag.co.uk on line? Disaster! It was time to take action! With no regard for my web designer’s morning beauty sleep I forced him out of bed with an early call. A few quick keystrokes on the computer at his end and suddenly www.adnag.co.uk became a presence on the web and the bells of Heaven sounded. Wahoo! Just in time!

Parelli officials, instructors and tour team members handed out schedules and welcomed us with big smiles. Anticipation was mounting. I was jabbering with excitement – a caffeinated gibbon would have been proud of me! We found our seats. Great seats: Third row from the floor at the far end of the arena. Hey, any seat at a Parelli conference, wearing an www.adnag.co.uk T-shirt is a great seat!

The instructors and Parelli team circled the arena, the music changed, the lights changed and we were ready. We got to our feet and started to clap. It was all very electric and then Pat, Linda, Remmer and Aspen made their big entrance. If you love horses, if you want to learn, if you want to be entertained, if you want to be inspired, if you want to live and have any sense of purpose or meaning, why would you want to be anywhere else??

It’s amazing that Parelli have come to England. Even more amazing is they’ve flown over three of their precious horses. Risky or what? After the horses have zoomed around the arena, Pat and Linda introduce the event. I’m really pleased …there’s going to be a ‘make over’ on a right brained horse. AT LAST! I can’t wait to learn about a psychopathic horse like mine at home. My pen twitches in anticipation.

Pat introduces the concepts that underpin Parelli, about how we need to become better humans for our horses (Aspen, his horse, is moving beautifully). Pat is chatting naturally. The audience enthralled. We learn the importance of using patterns to help horses be intelligent. So much to take in. My head is hurting. I can’t write fast enough. I hope it’s on Horse and country TV later!

Then it’s time for the ‘make-over’. Yes! I feel sorry for her, the volunteer! I’m sure she had no idea what she was letting herself in for. You could say that the volunteer and her horse, epitomise the British competition rider and the British horse/human relationship. She told Pat her frustrations with her horse: kicking other horses, not being able to stand still and being pushy! The first challenge for her was to trust her horse enough to let go of the reins and let him move by himself. Wow! It was interesting to watch the struggle. Then it got even more interesting! Pat introduced her to a carrot stick. It really gave me great insight at how hard it is for us humans to change patterns of behaviour. Pat explained that Left Brain Dominant horses respect the ‘driving game’ most, whereas right brain horses respect the light steady pressure of the ‘porcupine game’ more. It was interesting to see it so clearly. Understanding and respect were growing right before our very eyes. Halfway through the demo I wondered what she may have been thinking. Was she mad to volunteer for this? She was light years from her comfort zone. But this demo was exactly what the British Horse Public need to see – Our need for more savvy!

Pat finished the session by riding her horse and it was great to see him (her horse!) respond to polite and passive persistence. Wow! It was time for a break.

The toilets were busy (you needed to know that!) but we found some out back and then we collected our packed lunches from the car (you didn’t need to know that, but since you’re still reading, I guess you wanna know the details!). The www.adnag.co.uk T-Shirt girls re-grouped. We’d already been asked a lot about the www.adnag.co.uk site. Great!

And now it was time to shop! Horses, Parelli and now shopping? Oh yes, there is a God in Heaven! What to buy? Hmm… Decisions, decisions…. The Parelli equipment and resources were all good, beautifully designed, excellent quality and educational AND if I bought I wouldn’t be paying postage or import tax. I could already feel my husband’s, I mean MY, credit card beginning to flex. First I bought a cinche (no really, the nice gentleman said I needed it!). Next I bought the saddling DVD (bargain! Got to have it!), but already it was time to stop shopping as Neil Pye’s voice called us to our seats. Chance to win prizes! More excitement.

Now Linda Parelli introduces Remmer, her stunning warmblood. He is a left brain introvert. Linda talks us through the seven games. Pat then rounds off the day riding his beautiful mare – previously labelled the “Tasmanian Devil” – Magic, who had been through several professional predators (I mean trainers!) before she found Pat. Pat and Magic show us how foals learn using the left side of their brain to synchronise with their moms and that this is what we are aiming at – a partnership with our horses using love language and leadership!

Here are some of the snippets that I learnt:
1. The friendly game is all about touching the horse with your hand, or anything within your hand.
2. The friendly game at every zone needs to be established.
3. Teach horses to yield from pressure.
4. You don’t want dominant horses to draw to you too much until they are less dominant, as they usually just want to push right through you.
5. Give them responsibility then give them accountability.
6. Do less with lazy horses. Make it interesting then stop and change it before they want to.
7. Squeezes teach horses to have more self control. We’re aiming for willingness with communication – no robots.
8. Learning patterns helps my horse become intelligent. We want our horses to put their hearts and heads into it.
9. Right brain introverts need soft and subtle leadership and to be able to move their feet a little.
10. Everyone seeks leadership.
11. Patterns help horses know where you are leading and develop a stronger bond.
12. Catch verses attract.

And all too soon the first day was over, only the car park to negotiate but actually it wasn’t that bad. What a fantastic first day!

Day 2 started with a decisive plan of action to hit the shops early in the morning. A most excellent plan! Team 1’s target was the clothing stand to buy Katie Drake’s great CD “In Your Shoes”. Team 2’s target was the equipment stand. Thankfully there was a well organised ‘shop and drop’ to take care of our lorry-full of merchandise.

Back to our seats to say hello to all those sitting beside us who we could call our new friends. The Parelli instructors and their horses were first in the arena – all so different in style and character: Rachael Moorland (2* Parelli instructor from the UK), Wally Gegenschatz (and his cheeky Andalusian stallion), Eddy Murray (3* Parelli instructor with his dappled grey gaited horse) who was very interested in watching himself on the big plasma screens (the horse I mean!); Silke Vallentin, Carmen Zulauf, Berni Zambail and Adrian Heinen with his lovely Appallousa.

Rachel was riding bareback and bridleless. Berni’s lovely mule was jumping cow flavoured barrels, Wali’s horses were being cheeky. I wonder where they get it from? So much fun! Wali’s stallion starts playing with Bernie’s mule. Is this the Moscow Circus? Anyone’s for a carrot! It was great to see how Eddy helped his high spirited dappled grey horse regain composure when the energy in the arena just got too much for his sensitive nature. And how wonderful to see mules! I’d never see them in real life. A rare treat.

Pat explained about patterns, starting with the ‘clover leaf’ pattern. The pattern helps the horse to ask questions: When? Where? What? Can I have a carrot now? (I made the last question up!) Patterns enable a dialogue to start between us and our horse much like children asking can we stop for an ice-cream. It’s a bit like ‘Simon Says’ for the horse, which is make no assumptions. Pat explained why he uses little sayings – because repetition and consistency are great teachers, because repetition and consistency are great teachers, because repetition and consistency are great teachers. Got it?

Pat explained how horses hate lunging. Don’t waste the cream, ask them for attention when it’s the most difficult for them to give it at the beginning. Pat said he is president of the ‘too much fun club’! Yeh, too right!

Next up was Dennis. This was my favourite session. (Only because I have a ‘Dennis’ back home who thankfully, because of my increasing savvy, is a lot less like Dennis now!) Dennis was the extremely terrified horse. Sweating, head high and wide staring eyes. Andy, his owner, explained how he kept dumping his riders unpredictably. In my humble opinion no one should have been getting on his back in the first place! Pat quickly took over and allowed Dennis to circle using the big green ball as an obstacle to get in his way on a 12ft line attached to his webbing halter. Pat started to play a game with Dennis using an imaginary line that Dennis was encouraged not to cross. Pat made it easy for Dennis to stand still, and difficult when he was moving across the imaginary line. Dennis starts to lick his lips. When we understand how horses feel it’s amazing they tolerate us! When you do touch a Dennis horse, make sure it’s really gentle, like on the withers and nose as they are intimate places. Early on in the makeover Dennis exhibited terrified behaviour; fast shallow breaths; sweating and being tense all over. Circling was the wrong thing for this horse. Prey animal’s flight distance is to go 10% farther than their typical predator can run then they look back. Dennis was an extreme right brain extrovert. Pat backed him through barrels and sideways along the fencing until Dennis was finally able to think. Horses are sceptics, claustrophobics and cowards by nature. Pat’s progress with Dennis was by polite and passive persistence in the proper position – and it was working!

The Parelli technical guys were brilliant in their choice of songs: “Have a little patience!” (“Patience” by Take That) Dennis got closer to the big green ball. Pat played the friendly game, skipping with the rope. “I’m finally understanding, you are really on my side” said the music (Katie Drake’s “Meet in the Middle).) Dennis was visibly starting to use the left side of his brain. What a different horse he would have been if he had had a natural foundation.

Wow! What an inspiring session. Linda and Pat’s 14 year old niece Amy then brought Remmer in to do a lovely fluidity session, showing how through the Parelli programme you can advance to higher levels by building the correct foundation. Being a left brain introvert Remmer needed little warm up. It’s amazing how horses focus on their human partners and ignore all their surroundings once you have a great relationship.

Different ‘horsenalities’ give different responses that you look for to know they are in the right frame of mind. Right brain introverts need to play until they are trusting. Right brain extroverts until they are calm. Left brain introverts until they are motivated and left brain extroverts until they are obedient.

Linda explained balance through the horse’s body. By combing your reins the horse senses a slight tickling sensation on his mouth which is a friendly pleasant feeling. The cradle bridle is a neat invention which shares the contact between the nose, cheeks, poll and mouth giving it the functionality somewhere between a halter and a traditional bridle. When working on more advanced skills don’t try to be too perfect. Pet and rub your horse and never punish him. Horses are nearly always doing their best under the circumstances. After a success give them a break, then they will try their heart out for you!

Pat’s final session laid out plans for the future he sees, including new self-assessments, Savvy U-Tube, new Parelli games (e.g. Funssage not Dressage.) Then the Savvy team came in one last time and played to Celine Dion’s, “Have you ever been in love”.

And so came to an end a superb event. I am so grateful to be able to learn from Pat and Linda. They leave home to travel the world, work incredibly long hours, smile and then be gracious to thousands of horse lovers at all the tour stops, striving to be better and better, with big generous hearts, making the world a better place for horses and you and me! God bless them abundantly!! And God Bless www.adnag.co.uk.

Answering Your Horse Tack Questions

You do not have to own horse tack to own a horse but if you are going to ride this animal then you will need some equipment to ride him as well as equipment to help take care of him properly. Tack needs to be properly taken care of but first you need to know the basics of what to get and what it is made of.

If you do not know all of the pieces that you need, along with how to use them then the pieces of horse tack are pretty much useless to you. In this article we will cover some of those basics so that you will be up and running with your pet, literally, before you know it.

You will know what horse tack is, what it is made of, how it affects your pet and much, much more. So sit right back partner and enjoy the ride of learning all the basics of horse tack.

What is horse tack?

Horse tack is the necessary equipment needed to own and ride this animal. It can be anything from the stirrups of a saddle on to the metal shoes on the horse’s feet. Tack is an important part of any cowgirl or cowboy’s riding apparel and must be treated well.

Poorly maintained one shows and is a mark of how well the person takes care of their animal. Each piece of tack has a specific purpose and needs to be in good condition if it is going to be used on the animal. Improperly cared for tack can cause injury to a horse.

Do bits hurt the horse?

If used properly a bit does not cause the animal any form of injury but if used by an inexperienced rider the bit can injure the pet from too much pressure and can cause sores to form in the mouth. It is important, especially if you are a new rider, to receive instruction on how to use a bit properly to ensure the safety of a horse. The potential for damage to a horse’s mouth is great if used improperly.

What is a cinch?

A cinch is the piece of leather that holds the saddle in place. It goes beneath the horse’s belly and connects to both sides of the saddle. It is tightened into place snuggly to ensure that the saddle remains in place while the rider is aboard the horse’s back. It can be compared to your belt holding your pants into place. Without the belt your pants would fall down. It does not harm the horse at all.

How much can I expect to pay for horse tack?

Horse tack can vary widely depending on where you make your purchase. There are saddles and bridles that can be purchased used for less than one hundred dollars. On the same note you can buy hand crafted tack for thousands depending on who is the artisan making the saddle and bridle. So you see that it all depends on where you are shopping and who is making the tack.

Key Factors That Determine The Sound Of An Acoustic Guitar

Many think that the world of acoustic guitars is fairly cut and dry and that there aren’t many differences in how the instruments are configured. There are so many things to consider, especially when looking to purchase. With an acoustic guitar, what you get is what you get.  If you decide later that you don’t like the sound of the guitar, you can’t simply change the pickups like you can in an electric guitar. There are countless things that affect the sound of an acoustic guitar, some more important than others. The most important being the body style and the woods used to make the guitar. Smaller things like bracing and sound hole placement also have an effect on tonal characteristics.

1. Body Style and Size

The body style of an acoustic guitar has a larger effect on how it will sound than anything else. One doesn’t necessarily sound better than another, but they do have very different characteristics.  Body styles are commonly measured by the system Martin and Gibson pioneered in early acoustic guitar production.

Single Ought – 0

The smallest of the bodies is called a “single ought” which is written as a 0. They are more commonly referred to as a parlor guitar. The first Martin guitars built in the early 1800’s were this body style and were considered a large body at the time. They are ideal for fingerstyle playing and have stunning bell-like clarity especially in the higher registers.  When it comes to volume, these won’t knock you out of your chair but are still very responsive to touch.  They are almost always 12 fret which means the neck of the guitar meets the body at the twelfth fret.  In most guitars, the neck meets the body at the fourteenth fret.

Double Ought – 00

The next size up, written as 00 is called the “double ought.” It is the same body style as the smaller single ought but is larger. These are also usually twelve fret guitars but there are a few fourteen fret models out there. These guitars also have an outstanding clarity and are capable of producing more volume than the smaller single ought.  This body style is also ideal for fingerpicking but also can handle some moderately aggressive strumming.  They are more bass responsive than a single ought as well.

Triple Ought – 000

The next size, the 000 or “triple ought,” is also the same body style as the smaller 0 and 00 but larger still. They are very responsive and usually have rich bass and mid ranges. This body style is still very conducive to finger style but can also handle very aggressive strumming and flat-picking.  There are many models of both twelve and fourteen fret bodies available from different brands.

OM and OMC

The OM and OMC, which stands for “Orchestra Model” or “Orchestra Model Cutaway” are nearly identical to the 000, but have a longer scale length which is the distance between the nut and saddle. The two have almost identical tonal characteristics but some players prefer a longer or shorter scale length.

M

The final and largest of the 0’s is the “M” which is 0000. The M usually has a 16” lower bout which is the area of the body below the bridge. The lower bout is where most of the sound is produced and rings from. The M is a very well rounded instrument that really does well with all styles of playing.  It is still very clear and responsive for finger style playing and can withstand the most aggressive strumming. This body style was the choice of superstar Eric Clapton when he played an M-36 to record his unplugged album.  This body style is very well balanced throughout the registers and if made with the right materials is one of the loudest body styles.

Dreadnought

The most popular body style is the Dreadnought.  A flatpickers dream, the most popular of all production acoustics is the D-28. The dreadnought is very different from any of the 0’s.  It is not choked down as much at the sound hole. Though not as well balanced as the 000 or M, the dreadnought is very bass responsive because the body is thicker. They are very punchy and cut through a mix well, especially for single note flat-picking.  The dreadnought was not developed until the early 20th century and wasn’t mass produced by Martin until the early 30’s.  Now, a pre-war D-45 (a Martin D-45 built before the end of WWII – 1945) in good shape can be valued at more than a hundred thousand dollars.

Jumbo

The last body size I will talk about is the Jumbo body size.  This body style is exactly as the name suggests. The jumbo is most often used for twelve string guitars but is also used frequently for six strings. Guitar manufactures, Gibson, and Guild are the most common users of the Jumbo body style. They have very rich bass and mids and can produce that “knock you of your chair” volume that some are looking for. They are ideal for all types of strumming but are as good for fingerpicking.  The jumbo body style provides great volume but lacks in the crystal clear clarity that you get from the 0 style bodies. They are much clearer when used as a twelve string because the highs are far more present with the octave strings.

2. Type and Quality of Wood (Tonewoods)

The next very important thing to consider is the tonewoods used to make the guitar. There are endless possibilities of combinations and each produce unique tonal characteristics. Every piece of wood from the back sides and top, to the neck and fingerboard effect how an instrument will sound.  Not only does the type of wood matter, but also the quality of the wood.  The use of rare and exotic tonewoods significantly increases the cost of the instrument even if the woods are poor in quality.

The back and sides of the guitar are usually made from a hardwood, the two most common being Rosewood and Mahogany.  The top is usually a less dense wood like spruce or cedar though sometimes makers experiment using a harder wood for the top. The fingerboard is also usually a hardwood like Ebony or Rosewood but in some cases is a synthetic material.

Rosewood

There are several different types of Rosewood used for making guitars; the most common is East Indian Rosewood.  East Indian gives a very warm clear sound if paired with a spruce top, and provides rich bass response and volume.  Honduran Rosewood is used less frequently and has similar properties to East Indian Rosewood.  The most sought after Rosewood is Brazilian Rosewood.  Thought of as the “holy grail” of tonewoods, it was heavily used before WWII on vintage instruments and is almost always paired with Adirondack spruce. It is becoming increasingly difficult to get a new guitar with Brazilian Rosewood because the tree is endangered and the U.S. has an embargo on its import.

A quality piece of old growth Brazilian Rosewood has stunning bass response and outstanding clarity if paired with a quality Adirondack top.  If you can find a guitar with Brazilian Rosewood, you can expect to pay north of ten thousand dollars. There are a few alternatives to Brazilian that have similar characteristics and don’t come with quite as high a price tag. Cocobolo is a type of Rosewood that even looks similar to Brazilian with brilliant reds and oranges. It also provides wonderful clarity. Ziricote is another type of Rosewood that is also very similar to Brazilian. It has a similar grain pattern but has more yellows and grays than reds and oranges.

Mahogany

Mahogany is the next most common wood used for back and sides.   It provides a brighter sounding guitar than Rosewood and is often described as being very woody and natural sounding.  It doesn’t have the punch that Rosewood does and doesn’t give quite as much volume.  Hawaiian Koa is another type of Mahogany that grows only in Hawaii. Its tonal properties are in between Rosewood and traditional Mahogany.  It is often used for Ukuleles. When paired with an Engelmann spruce top it makes for a sweet sounding fingerstyle guitar.  It is often used as a top by Taylor which provides for a much darker sounding instrument but is stunning to look at.  Korina is another type of Mahogany that is used on rare occasions but is more commonly used for electric guitar bodies.

Maple, Walnut, and Ebony

Some less commonly used woods are Maple, Walnut, and Ebony. Maple makes for a very bright sounding guitar with less bass response, and is often used for Jumbo guitars to help the clarity lost by the body style.  Ebony is a dense wood similar to Rosewood but is almost black in color. Walnut is a good all purpose wood that has good qualities from both Rosewood and Mahogany but is not used very often.

Spruce

The top of a guitar is called the soundboard and is usually always a type of spruce. The top needs to be less dense to allow the sound to come through it. The most common type of spruce used is Sitka spruce.  The grain of Sitka is very dark and usually very straight.  Sitka is a good top for those who like to strum aggressively because it is the densest of the spruce family.  Engelmann spruce is a much lighter grained spruce that is often paired with Koa or Maple. It is clearer and responds better than Sitka.  It is a good top for fingerstlye players.  Adirondack spruce, also known as red spruce is the top of choice for premier guitars.  Many say it doesn’t get any better than Brazilian rosewood matched with Adirondack spruce.  It is considered a premium tonewood and quality pieces are becoming more and more scarce.  It provides a clearer and punchier tone than Sitka, which makes for a great flat-picking top, but is also very responsive to a lighter touch for fingerstyle or classical.

Some less commonly used tops are; Western red cedar, German spruce, Carpathian Spruce, and Redwood.

3. Materials that Make Up the Rest of the Guitar

The last thing to consider is the materials that make up the rest of the guitar.  Little things can very subtly change the sound of the guitar.

The Fingerboard

If the fingerboard is made from a hardwood like Rosewood or ebony, the guitar will have better sustain than if made from a synthetic material or Micarta. The nut and saddle are also important. The standard for premium guitars is bone. Many are also a type of tusk.  If the nut and saddle are made from plastic it will effect sustain.

Bracing

Last but not least, the bracing of the guitar has an effect on the sound as well.  Most of bracing falls into to two categories.  Straight bracing, and scalloped bracing.  Scalloped bracing gives superior resonance because the braces are shaved down.  The soundboard has to be braced to provide the strength needed to support the tension of the strings.  This means extra wood which can dampen the sound.  With scalloped bracing, there is less wood without sacrificing any strength.  Scalloped bracing was used in prewar Martins and is still used in higher end instruments.

All these things play a major role in the tonal characteristics of the guitar.  Everything from type and quality of tonewoods down to the way the top is braced, no matter how subtly, effects how the guitar will sound.  Everyone has different tastes as to what sounds great, and the only way to find out is to try as many different combinations as you can get your hands on.

Happy strumming.
