Has anyone participated in a Lunge line class at a horse show?
There is a horse show in July in my area that has a lunge line class. I was wondering what exactly the judge is looking for, and what is expected. I’d like to take my yearling into that class.
It’s a local show, no breed specified. Maybe I’ll ask them what they are going to expect. I would like to be prepared.
When I did the lung line class when my gelding was a colt, I had a lot of fun. Not many people entered the class when I did though. Less competition, but had to have more focus.
Had to have a lung halter and lead line. Wips were optional, but could not touch the horse, only the ground. Excessive wipping on the ground could be faulted. (Use good verbal!).
Started out with my horse at the walk in any direction you prefer (counter or clock wise). The announcer would ask to pick up at the jog and then lope. He would say stop, reverse and repeated again. Then he would say “please top your horse and be ready for inspection”. where you would ask your horse to “come here” and stand him or her up as do in halter class. He woudl ask to back the horse up at least 5 steps. then done.
Now each show was just a tad different. Some didn’t do the inspection and some did.
You need to talk to the ring stewertist and announcer prior to going into t he class. Ask the judge prior to the class (before show starts) what his/her expectation would be as you never entered a class like this. Most would give pointers as majority of all mine has as I only had 2 judges say they are not allowed to give pointers (which they are….in open shows).
Horse should remain calm, collected and willing to work. Looking for how well the horse responds to the handler and any behaviors are present: bucking, breaking gait, high spirited etc.
