Craig’s 2009 NBA Western Conference Championship Odds Breakdown and preview

Finally, the NBA Playoffs are upon us. Not a minute too soon. Craig Trapp from CT Sports Picks is hot, as his NBA Plays have gone 10-2 in the last 10 days. Today, Craig will break down the odds of making the Conference Finals for each Western Conference Playoff squad. There’s some great value to be had here if you can get past the huge favorite Los Angeles Lakers. If you missed Craig’s article breaking down the Eastern Conference odds, make sure you check it out also!

Los Angeles Lakers: -400

This team has all the weapons that any coach would want to win a championship. The West Title will go through L.A. But let’s throw them out for any future, since there is no betting value.

Denver Nuggets: +800

Yes, you read it correctly: The Nuggets have 8:1 odds to win the Western Conference Championship. Do not sleep on a very deep Denver team that can score at will against any team including the Lakers. By the way, they are one of the few teams to win at L.A. this season. They’re the best option to beat the Lakers in the WCF; Chauncey Billups has won a championship and could carry this team a very long way.

Utah Jazz: +800

Not sure what oddsmakers are thinking with this team. They’re the eight-seed and will face Kobe and Lakers first round.  The Jazz can’t win on the road and has no way to beat L.A.

Houston Rockets: +800

And here’s another perplexing future odds. If this team could play every game at home, they might have a chance, but they can’t go to L.A. or Denver and win consistently. Would have been interesting bet with Tracy McGrady, but his injury makes this team an afterthought.

Portland Trail Blazers: +1000

The Blazers have been very hot late in the season, even away from home. Plus, they’ve got the second-best player in the West, Brandon Roy. This club could give the Lakers a very tough series in the second round. Too bad they couldn’t play their way to the three-seed so as to stay away from L.A. until the finals.  Kobe & Co. are too experienced, but the Blazers are interesting at 10-to-1.

San Antonio Spurs: +1000

These past champions will go down swinging, but without Ginobili (due to injury), this team will lose in one of the first two rounds.

New Orleans Hornets: +1300

Chris Paul is playing at an elite level, but the rest of his team has not picked up their game. The Hornets would need a triple-double every game from CP3 to have any chance. Don’t be surprised if they get swept in first round of Western Conference Playoffs. These future odds should be more like 20-to-1.

Dallas Mavericks: +2500

The odds say it all. This team just can’t stop anyone consistently on defense.  The Western Conference Championship will most likely be won by one of three teams: the Los Angeles Lakers, Denver Nuggets, or Portland Trail Blazers. But there’s no way you can bet the favored Lakers, so either take a swing with one of the two longshots!

Glenbrook Vintage Railway – preserving the stories of the rail

Glenbrook in New Zealand is home to the country’s foremost heritage sites for railways. The Glenbrook Vintage Railway (GVR) is a steam railway which is self sufficient. Due to the support and volunteerism generated from the Railway Enthusiasts Society the GVR was able to become a reality. The steam railway that operates is not a centre that serves the purpose of a museum instead it is an ongoing assignment where pieces of rail heritage are collected, restored and replicated as resources permit. The GVR runs along a rail track that is 6km in length and can carry 30,000 passengers at a time during a normal season of operation. The season starts in October and ends in June every year. At the moment the society that supports the GVR is working on plans to extend the railway line even further to the Tamakae reserve, located in Waiuku town. For rail enthusiasts this is perhaps one of the few places in the world where the beauty of rail transport and all the trimmings that go with it are preserved and even restored so that it could be enjoyed by present day generations. The centre is maintained and staffed completely by volunteers and every year the tourist numbers keeping increasing among those who would like to gaze over these beautiful engines The GVR organises special events such as ‘Friends of Thomas the Tank Engine’ during weekends. The programme has become a huge hit among families that have grown up around this well loved story book character. Other exhibitions have showcased freight trains and even country and western themed steam runs which go on during the night as well as the day. With many Auckland hotels to choose from while on vacation, tourists prefer to stay where it is convenient to access the city’s motorways. Among the Auckland luxury hotels on offer the Langham Hotel Auckland allows easy access to the City Link Bus which is adjacent to the hotel. In addition, the hotel is within walking distance to the business and shopping districts.

Is a Raw Diet for Dogs Really Better?

Is a raw diet for dogs really the answer to concerns over commercial dog food? Ask yourself this: What does a dog in the wild eat? Of course, domesticated animals tend to live longer than their counterparts in the wild. But this is mainly due to the fact that in the wild animals have to compete with others for a sometimes very limited supply of food.

Here’s an even more important consideration when considering a raw diet for dogs: dogs in the wild, at least what researcher have been able to find, do not suffer from chronic disease like so many domesticated dogs do. Dogs in the wild don’t get diabetes or arthritis. This would lead you to believe that it is what we feed our pet that is responsible for their poor health in quality of life in their later years.

We conclude that a raw diet for dogs is indeed much better than commercial dog food. However, there would not be a whole lot of difference if you were to cook that food as well. The key is that the ingredients are fresh and as close to organic as possible.

Please remember, though, that there are some loop holes in the law that allows food producers to slap the ‘organic’ label on food that really isn’t organic. Do your homework.

Benefits Of Raw Diets For Dogs

Many dog owners have noticed considerable improvements in various aspects of their dog’s health when fed a raw diet. For example, dull coats and skin were observed to become more shiny and healthy looking. The notorious bad breath that dogs was cleared up and became fresh and clean-smelling. Allergy symptoms were seen to decline or completely disappear. Better digestion and healthier looking stools have also been observed in dogs fed a raw diet.

So what kinds of food are part of a good raw diet for dogs? Any part of a chicken is good for your dog. However, do not give your dog chicken bones. These can splinter and harm the stomach and intestines. Turkey, hens and quail are also good. Like chicken, you should remove the bones from these animals before giving them to your dog.

Beef and buffalo are also good parts of a raw diet for dogs. Feel free to include the bones. They are ok for the dog to eat and digest. However, DO NOT give your dog cooked beef or buffalo bones. These can splinter and harm your dog.

A raw diet for dogs is not complete with just meat and protein. Your dog will be nutrient deficient if you don’t also feed him or her vegetables, fruits and whole grains. Experiment with various fruits, vegetables and grains until you find all the ones your dog enjoys eating.

The Dangers Of A Raw Diet For Dogs

If your dog will not eat fruit, vegetables and grains, then you must supplement their raw meat diet with a healthy commercial dog food that doesn’t use meat by-products, but rather real meat. Your dog will not get the proper nutrients they need to be healthy on meat alone.

Of course, cooked meats are a good alternative to a raw diet for dogs. The damage commercial dog food does to our pets is not in the cooking, it’s the heavy processing. Lightly cooking meats before feeding them to your pet is ok.

Raw diets are appropriate for puppies, as well. However, be careful giving bones to a puppy. They can’t deal with bones like an adult dog can.  Raw diets are gaining popularity with pet owners who are concerned with the harm commercial dog food can do to pets.  Raw diets allow your dog to live a happier and healthier life.

Vacation With Kids- Select From The Best Five

Deciding on the next vacation with your family can be a daunting task, especially when your choice of place does not interest your children. You might plan to visit Alaska, but your children could be longing for a trip to the Bahamas. The best option is to figure out where your kids wish to go this vacation and finalize a kid-friendly destination.

With the release of movies like ‘Madagascar’, children have become all the more keen to travel through exotic and adventurous destinations. While Madagascar is not considered to be the most popular family destination, a trip to other places like Costa Rica or Kenya can prove to be an invaluable fun-filled learning experience, well within your budget. Costa Rica serves a dual purpose as your children can learn Spanish as they explore the lush green rain forests or erupting volcanoes. Even Kenya can be a good option, as the family can learn to speak a little Swahili while exploring the rare glimpse of the mass migration of the wild beasts. You can enjoy your vacation with children listening to the sounds from within the rainforests, as well as relaxing under the star-studded sky on a safari that would be certainly more interesting for the whole family.

Eastern cities like Beijing, Seoul and Bangkok are also part of the list of favorite destinations with children, in terms of adventure. The holiday can prove to be a learning and entertainment experience, as one can see the Great Wall and learn about different cultures. Different food, different money and an altogether different way of life can be highly entertaining for you. But, entry to the country could probably take a considerable amount of time, so plan your trip well ahead of time to ensure a smooth trip to your chosen destination.

European cities such as Italy have also gained tremendous popularity over the years, but a trip might be a little too expensive. However, the Western Europe country trips generally come with discounts and amenities. You can experience a different culture. You can explore the ruins of Pompeii and go on a Gondola ride in Venice or taste delicious Italian sweets in Florence. Most Western European families enjoy vacations to countries like Italy. This gives them an opportunity to explore their ancestors.

The Caribbean is the next best holiday spot with children. Basking in the sun, playing in the sand and swimming in the deep blue water are the local indulgences that also form the basic reason for a number of families visiting this place. The holiday spot is blessed with plenty of sun, sand and water. Jamaica is full of fascinating natural beauty that is breathtaking. With white sandy beaches, black volcanic mountains and deep red sunsets, the island has evolved into a tourist’s paradise.

Hawaii as a holiday destination is also very popular with a number of children visiting the place every year. It also offers sun, sand and water in abundance, along with all kinds of summer and water sport activities ranging scuba diving to swimming with the dolphins. You can also go whale watching. Besides having fun with your family, you can also acquaint yourself more closely with the volcanic geology of Hawaii.

No matter where you plan to go for your next family vacation, do not limit yourself. Always try to explore the place to its fullest and get as foot loose and fancy free as possible. Select a destination that will be stimulating and fulfilling for your entire family. But, do not forget to plan your trip properly, as a trip to the most fascinating destination too can be very stressful without proper planning.

The Colorado Ranger Is The Original Rocky Mountain High Horse

The Colorado Ranger Horse was named for its Colorado High Plains origin. Verbal references to those “range bred” horses eventually led to their being more commonly known as Rangerbreds or Rangerbred Horses. But despite its appearance, the Rangerbred is not a type of Appaloosa even though many Rangerbreds are double-registered with the Appaloosa Horse Clubs of both the United States and Canada. It has its own unique heritage.

Colorado Ranger Horses were bred for being cow savvy, and can anticipate the movements of cattle, and for their performance capabilities. They excel in ranch work with great stamina and do well in endurance competitions.

Colorado Ranger Horses are refined horses due to their Arabian/Barb ancestry and are compact animals, with powerful hindquarters. Like most popular breeds, Rangerbred sizes range from 14.2 to 16+ hands with the average height at 15.2 hands, and they have good dispositions.

Although the breed as we know it today is considered to have originated in America, its roots can be traced back to Constantinople, Turkey.

During 1878, General Ulysses S. Grant visited Sultan Abdul Hamid of Turkey as part of a world tour. The Sultan, in showing his regard for the General, gave him the gift of two desert stallions; a blue-gray Barb named Linden Tree and a gray Siglavy-Gidran Arab named Leopard. These horses are listed in the studbooks of both the Jockey Club and the Arabian Horse Club and their influence has touched almost every breed of horse in the United States.

These two horses went to Virginia at first, where they were used as foundation sires in a new breed of light-harness horse called the Americo Arab. But when the automobile was invented, along with other difficulties, the breeding project was discontinued in 1906 and his herd was disbanded.

So, Leopard and Linden Tree spent a season in Nebraska and sired a few foals, some spotted or colored, from the native mares of the General Colby Ranch. A.C. Whipple, of Kit Carson County in Colorado, obtained a herd of broodmares from the Colby Ranch who were all sired by either Linden Tree or Leopard. In addition, a black-eared white stallion named Tony was used as the herd stallion, because he was double bred to Leopard and was part of the family’s extensive line-breeding program using Tony and his sons.

In the early 20th Century, Mike Ruby, of the Lazy J Bar Ranch, bought one of Tony’s sons, a stallion named Patches and Max, son of Waldron Leopard. He used these stallions as the foundation sires of the new breed, in which unusual coloring was seen more and more frequently in his herd of more than 300 mares.

So, in essence, the Colorado Ranger was developed by Mike Ruby, who kept meticulous records on every foal that he bred. These records included foaling dates, coat patterns and complete pedigrees and are still in existence today with all horses still being recorded by hand in these ledgers, as well as by more modern methods in the Colorado Ranger breed registry.

After two leopard-patterned stallions were displayed at the Denver Stock Show, they created such a sensation that Mike Ruby was urged by the faculty of what is now Colorado State University to name this new breed of horse. And so the Colorado Ranger Horse was officially named in 1934 to reflect that they originated in Colorado and were bred and raised under range conditions.

And with the naming of the breed came the breed registry. The Colorado Ranger Horse Association (CRHA) is an older registry than the Appaloosa Horse Club (ApHC). In fact, it is the oldest of the western horse breed registries still in existence in the United States. It was founded in 1935 by Mike Ruby, who was its first president until his death in 1942. Its corporate charter was granted in 1938. Ironically, its home office is currently in Pennsylvania.

In the beginning, registration was limited only to the first 50 CRHA members, so a lot of true Rangerbreds were not allowed to be registered with CRHA. However, those horses with the appropriate color patterns were gladly accepted by the Appaloosa Horse Club which was another breed registry that was founded several months later. In 1964, the CRHA lifted the fifty member limit and registration was opened to all horses meeting the pedigree requirements, regardless of the owner’s membership status. This enabled the CRHA to register many of the Appaloosas that had Rangerbred heritage that were “lost” to the organization for so many years.

About 90% of all registered Rangerbreds are also registered with the Appaloosa Horse Club, but not all Appaloosas are eligible for registration with the CRHA, unless they have the required pedigree that shows a direct descent from one of the two foundation stallions, Max #2 and/or Patches #1 in an unbroken line. Patches #1 was purchased from the Whipple Ranch and traces to both Leopard and Linden Tree. Max #2 came from the Governor Oliver Shoup ranch at Colorado Springs and is descended from Waldron Leopard.

While many Colorado ranger horses display the same color patterns as the appaloosa, the CRHA is a bloodline registry, not a color registry. In fact, color and markings are not considered in eligibility for registration, only ancestry is. The breed’s founder wisely decided that a horse’s ability has nothing to do with color of his coat.

As with the Appaloosa Horse Club (ApHC), the CRHA recognizes the same approved outcrosses as the ApHC. The following breeds are considered as acceptable outcrosses for the Rangerbred and may be used in a CRHA Breeding Program: The American Jockey Club (TB), The American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA)., ApHC of USA, Canada & Foreign, The Arabian Horse Club (AHC), ARA-APP, and the International Colored Appaloosa Association (ICAA) (with certain reservations). The outcrossed mare must be registered with one of the above registries. Paints & pintos are not among these approved outcrosses.

Research indicates that one out of every eight Appaloosas is of Rangerbred heritage and also eligible for CRHA registration.

Between Realism and Fiction , Dege – Western Kham

Dege, Western Kham, Border with Tibet

Long before the sun rises we are up. Behind the mountains it begins to dawn, we are engulfed by the beauty of the morning.

The night had been noisy, with Tibetan lemurs rummaging overhead in the double wooden ceiling, sleeping was difficult. Where we sleep, kitchen, hall and bedroom in one, the typical Tibetan house. Throughout the night I carried a flashlight to spot the noisy little creatures who were after the Chambar, the rye flour stored in the kitchen in a wooden box.

The breakfast is painstakingly prepared with Chambar, salted tea and yak butter, yak cheese, mingled in a cup and bare fingers. The hospitality of the Tibetan people has no equivalent, we are honored guests in their house, and dare not to refuse their persuasive welcome.

Red Tibetan furniture all around us, wooden tables, an open kitchen furnace, we sit on our bed eating and drinking the salted Lapsang, planning for the day. We will ascend to the mountains staying overnight , where wolves and bears still roam freely. As a result, every Tibetan carries a dagger, richly decorated with Silver and gemstones, according to his social standing.

A car takes us to the school where Mr. Chen’s wife is teaching Tibetan kids, in a scenic settlement 30 miles outside the city of Dege. We visit the school, its basic facilities and see only smiling, curious faces. Horses were called in the day before to carry me to the mountain, an almost impossible thought to bear. The means of communication is by word to mouth, as no transport other than by foot or horse can reach to this remote parts in 4000 m altitude.

We start our ascent at 0900 AM and the breathtaking beauty of the valley immediately takes me into a trance. My guide’s pace is fast, difficult to follow pace, I grasp for air in such high altitude. Alpine meadows on our way, tall yellow and purple cowslips along the trails, in the mountain meadows make me remember my own heritage. So similar is the vegetation here, I almost forget I am 8000 Miles from home in a far away location.

The trail is steep, the first plateau reached we stare at the mountains around us, the valley below, fields of rye in golden yellow. The main route to Chamda and to Lhasa, a 5 days journey by car. So vast are the distances here, one needs to shut off his sensing of time entirely for the duration of this journey. Time has no meaning, we are only temporary on this Earth.. Tibetan wisdom comes in many shapes.

The stream we now try to cross is covering the trail over hundreds of meters and we attempt to jump from stone to stone with limited success. Ice cold fresh mountain spring water, a definite substitute to the bottled water in PET packing. Prayer flags with diverse colors line the places where the water is deep, marking the auspiciousness of the location. Mountains and cliffs towering over our heads as we progress into the high altitude dwelling place of my guide’s grandparents. Eagles cry, circling above in the clear blue sky, looking for prey.

An hour into the walk we meet our horses, sent to take us on horseback to our destination. I chose not to ride and pack our luggage on the horseback, a white mare. Noticing the rider’s pregnancy I wonder how strong these people must be, living year in year out in such remoteness. No medical facilities, totally dependent on Tibetan Traditional Healing, easier in the summer months, unimaginable in winter when ice and snow cover the mountains.

A two and half hour ride on horseback, she immediately sets off to return back to her home. Astonishing endurance, strength, people here are robust like no other. I encounter the first Edelweiss on my trip, it makes me forget the strain on my body, for too long I was out of practice since leaving my home country. Recalling my Military training, Hauptmann Lukesch, and the 50 Miles we marched in Alpine regions, I think back and realize how time has passed so quickly.

Here in this region I find a variety of plants, wild fruits, Gooseberries, wild Strawberries, Raspberries in deep red growing nearby. Reminding me of my youth and the Alpine world I grew up with, where we would roam in the meadows after school, using the mountains as a playground, once again I see reflections of my early days appearing with every step I climb these trails.

We zigzag along the rocky paths, it takes all my strength for its steepness. The higher we reach the more spectacular the views, the more you feel yourself free. Only a mountaineer can understand this feeling, perhaps I felt a similar sensation the night I found myself in Beyla, Guinea.

The serpentine paths become more steep, walking dangerously close near to cliffs I realize I made a good choice not to move on horseback. Not being a good rider it would have been too risky, a reckless idea I contemplate.

Well into the afternoon, long overdue we reach the first house on a long stretch of green, rye growing up in this altitude of 4000 meters. We set of at 3000 meters, but the ascent was so strenuous it took me 8 hours to climb. Here in the mountains everyone knows each other, so our arrival had been heralded and we are invited to the first dwelling we see.

Sitting in the dark kitchen with only basic amenities, the lady of the house and her grandson invites me with the same hospitality I am so used to since coming to these parts. All I take is some fresh mountain spring water, trying hard to recover from the climb.

One can not describe the condition of this dwelling place, were it not to hurt the genuine people’s feelings. All they have is this, and this is their life. The rye gives them food throughout the year, and represents their staple diet. All houses in Tibetan tradition are built of raw timber, logs of Fir and are painted with a red mixture that contains yak butter. The yak butter helps to preserve the logs for a long period of time. When entering these parts one immediately notices this phenomena without realizing the deeper meaning of it.

I dread to climb further up and really push myself to reach the last 300 meters where the grandfather is anxiously awaiting us. We can see the house further up the mountain and can see the grandfather standing and looking towards us.

The last stretch lasts forever and I take a rest every now and then, grasping for air. When we finally reach, I feel totally exhausted.

Of course you can go anywhere, but the place not to be missed is the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests for horse camping and hiking trails. Situated in north central Colorado, this forest and grassland covers 1.5 million acres of land. It starts from the north of the Wyoming border that is to the south; and goes up to Interstate 70 towards Mount Evans. This forest covers up the Continental Divide going to the William Fork area, from the west side. This forest is so expanded and has a lot of wild animals to be seen. So if you decide to visit this place, then in spite with all the luxuries provided, you will be extremely happy to see the wild species roaming around.

Since the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests is like a big jungle, once you enter it, you are more likely to get confused and lost, most of the times, and therefore carrying a GPS along would prove to be a great idea.
