English Disciplines – Dressage

When thinking of dressage the first thing that often comes to mind are the incredible efforts of the riders in the Olympic dressage ring each Summer Olympics. What many people don’t know is that there is a lot more to dressage than just competing at the higher levels.

“Dressage” is actually derived from the French word for “training”. So basically, any training you do with your horse is a form of dressage. From teaching your horse basic aids and transitions to more advanced moves, proper training is the key to dressage.

Any horse can learn dressage. At the lower levels even the most homely pleasure horse can compete successfully. This is because the basics of dressage have nothing to do with how fancy a horse is or how well it moves, but instead are based on good transitions, correct carriage and quality riding. Whether you are looking to compete, or just want better enjoyment from your horse, basic dressage will give you a leg-up in your riding.

At the lowest levels the movements in dressage are very simple. There are even classes set up for horses and riders who are not yet ready to move up from doing walk-trot. Basic tests focus on the walk, trot and canter, simple forms such as 20 meter circles and riding across the diagonal and simple transitions. The tests are judged on how willing the horse is, whether the movements are performed correctly, if the rider is effective in his or her aids and the smoothness of the ride overall.

As you gain experience and show in higher levels things become more difficult. The horse is expected to carry itself in a correct frame, working on the bit and moving forward from its hindquarters. While the basic three gaits are still important, the tests begin to add things like lengthening and shortening stride which gradually progresses to true collection and extension. As the horse progresses, it will be expected to learn lateral movements such as leg yields, half passes, shoulder in and many others. Further training moves into high-collection movements such as piaffe, pirouettes and multiple lead changes.

In the higher levels a horse is expected to be of a higher quality. While in lower levels any horse should be able to perform adequately, the higher levels look for an animal who is a class above the rest. Riders look for horses with superb movement, often with lots of action in the front end. They need to be able to track up from behind so that they can carry themselves in such a way as to free up the front end for higher level movements. Ideally riders seek a horse who naturally is built uphill and who can carry itself in a good frame without being restricted by conformational problems. Most riders prefer a bigger horse of a warmblood-type build, neither overly light, nor heavy.

A good dressage test is a true joy to watch. Horse and rider work together in quiet unity seemingly dancing through the test as though in a private ballet. Indeed, a well ridden Grand Prix test is truly awe inspiring.

When and How to Put a Horse to Sleep

Although some horses (like some people) have the good fortune to die peacefully in their sleep of old age, most horses will eventually reach a stage (due to severe injury, disease or incapacity) where the most humane action is to put them down. For the horse owner, this can be a very difficult and painful decision, in terms of when a horse should be put down, as well as how. This article is the personal view of one horse owner on this subject.

Is Now the Time?

If a horse is in a lot of pain and distress, due to an incurable injury or disease, the only correct action is to put it down as quickly and as humanely as possible. However, in some cases the decision is not as clear.

For example, a horse may be in permanent pain but quite capable of happily living with it. This was the case of a draft horse pensioned with us, who had a chronic case of laminitis which made walking painful (especially over hard surfaces). As an elderly horse, he also had dental issues which made chewing uncomfortable. However, by supplementing his diet with soft food and giving him maximum time on soft pasture, his discomfort was minimised. He was a stoic horse, who seemed little bothered by pain, and obviously enjoyed life. He would trot around the pasture with his head held high and come to us for cuddles. Although retired, he was active in the pasture and obviously enjoyed life despite the constant pain in his feet and when he ate.

For me, the question is not how much pain the horse is in, but rather is he still happy and enjoying life. One can tell this not only by how the horse behaves at the moment, but also how his behavior has changed in response to injury or illness. When life changes from a pleasure to a burden, that is the time for the horse to be put down.

Economic Constraints

Aside from illness and disease, many horses are put down for financial reasons, such as:

- Competitive Horses. Many horses are bred and raised for competitions (e.g. racing), with the vast majority of these not making the grade. The ones which are not fast enough are often either put down, or sold for slaughter, or sold into questionable circumstances.

- Elderly Horses. Older horses, having reached the end of their productive life (e.g. riding), leave the owner with a decision between puting the horse down or paying for an expensive (and potentially lengthy) retirement.

- Medical Costs. Injuries and illnesses can be very expensive. For example, a severe case of colic which requires surgery can cost $10 000, with no guarantee that the treatment will be successful. With the average horse costing $3000 or less (in many cases, much less), horse owners of limited financial resources face a difficult decision.

Although the economic pressures are real, there are alternatives:

- Rescue Organisations. There are numerous horse rescue organisations, which will find new homes for horses young and old. Some of them will even take on medical costs. Your local veterinarian is a good source to ask, not only for the large organisations but also for the smaller ones and the local private activities.

- New Owners. Although a horse may have no apparent economic value, there may still be many potential alternative owners that would be happy to provide it a new home. For example, people which have purchased a horse for their private use recognise that they need a second horse as a companion to the first. For this purpose, even an old or unusable horse may be perfectly suitable. There are a number of websites where one can advertise horses for this and similar purposes, often free of charge.

One may not always be able to find a solution for every horse. However, before putting down a horse which is still enjoying its life, remember that there are alternatives.

How

When your horse has reached the point where it needs to be put down, the question is no longer ‘when’ but rather ‘how’.

The normal methods are by injection (sedative overdose) or by a slaughter gun which fires a bolt directly into the brain. In both cases, this should be done by a professional. In particular, the use of a slaughter gun should be done by an experienced person, as inexperienced people have been known to shoot the horse without killing it on first attempt, resulting in terrible pain until the mistake can be corrected. Whatever one might see in western movies, the use of a hunting gun is highly questionable, due to the risk that the bullet may not penetrate the thick skill and immediately end the horse’s life.

If the horse is at home when the decision is make, it is kindest to the horse to put it down there (e.g. have a veterinarian come out and give a lethal injection). If the horse is severely injured or ill, transport to another location adds to its suffering. Furthermore, unfamiliar surroundings may cause it distress (particularly if taken to a slaughterhouse, where the horse may panic in response to the smell of blood). The main obstacle to this approach is the difficulty of transporting the body afterwards, so prior to putting a horse down one needs to consider whether it is necessary to first move it to a more practical location.

For personal safety, if the horse is standing up, one needs to either lie it down prior to euthanasia or be careful that nobody becomes trapped under the horse if it falls while being euthanized. Professionals (e.g. a veterinarian) should have the experience and sufficient detachment to consider such practicalities.

Unless one personally knows and trusts the person performing the euthanasia, one should remain with the horse until the end, to ensure that your wishes in this regard are properly carried out. For example, it has been known for professional slaughter staff to transport horses to the location which is most convenient for them, even though it meant additional suffering for the animal. Staying with your horse allows you to ensure that your horse ends its life with minimum distress.

Horse Racing – Looking Back At Last Triple Crown Winner

Every sport has its legends.  Horse racing is no exception.   There have been horse legends throughout the years that people still remember and talk about.   One of the most prestigious feats to accomplish in horse racing is that of a triple crown.  There have only been a handful or two that have done it in the sport and a repeat is even rarer.  In 1978, there had never been a Triple Crown winner that one back to back.  This was the year when horse racing history was written.  Affirmed provided a new record set, and went into the history books.

The biggest part about this event was the rivalry between Affirmed and competitor Alydar.  They met at first in 1977 during the Youthful Stakes.  Affirmed came out the winner, but Alydar followed closely behind and started one of the greatest horse rivalries there has ever been.  These 2 year olds slugged it out in almost every other race thereafter.

Earlier in 1978 Affirmed won all four starts that he had in California and it set the stage for the three Triple Crown Races.  The first of the three races was initially dominated by Believe It, while Affirmed held back.  In the final stretch both Affirmed and Alydar made a push, but Affirmed came out on top.

The next race was just as breathtaking, with Affirmed coming into the race on top but slowly getting pressure from Alydar.  Alydar and Affirmed ran neck and neck until the end of the race where Affirmed one with the stretch of his neck.  The last race of the Triple Crown happened three later at the Belmont Stakes.  This was one of the most defining moments in horse racing history.

After a half mile into the race, the two horses were already running about neck and neck with Affirmed in first place.  As they reached the final stretch, Alydar came right up next to Affirmed.  Alydar took the initial lead down the stretch but Affirmed had just enough left in him to come out on top yet again.  The crowd cheered and Affirmed secured his Triple Crown victory.

Alydar and Affirmed only raced each other one more time and it was at the Travers Stakes in Saratoga.  Affirmed won this race as well but was later disqualified for interfering with Alydar earlier in the race.  His following performances resulted in two more losses but he still won Horse of the Year for his incredible accomplishments.  Affirmed had an incredible run during his career, and every horse trainer is hoping that their mares will compare at some point.

Motivating Black Youth

Dear Cousin,

I write to you today in a bid to dissuade you from your present way of life and to suggest to you an alternative path to that which you are currently set upon. You might find my discourse too idealistic and simplistic, but bear in mind I write only and solely to you and not to a collective, for I believe that in a mind as young and fertile as yours, the seeds which I offer are likely to take root and germinate if you would take care to nurture and tend them.

The least you can do to honour the memory of those who departed under the yoke, sorrow and horror of slavery is to make the very most use of what they toiled for- the Elysium which they sought for their progeny and subsequent descendants of which you are one. Attempting to do this is the least you owe to them; else they have endured and toiled in vain for the freedom which you so carelessly devalue by your disregard for society and its values.

The spirit that lives on in you, the same spirit which was not cowed, which fought and struggled for your present liberties is the same spirit you must now learn to tame and put to fruitful productive use, for the halcyon days of your race finally beckon.

You might mistake ‘FREEDOM’ in the Western World to mean a chance to become materially wealthy. True, most members of your race more than any other is and always has been steeped in material poverty, but one thing you must realise is: Material wealth in itself does not constitute freedom, no matter how much.

Freedom represents the presence of opportunities previously denied. An opportunity to become wealthy yes, but above all the opportunity to do so through legal and rewarding means…through education. Seizing this opportunity and making good use of the free resources afforded by your state will help you become a good and upright CITIZEN.

Departing from this path unto the path of crime and illegality is akin to rejecting freedom and enslaving yourself, not too unlike your forefathers before you, who were bound and gagged against their will. But in your case, crime and drudgery become your masters. You will forever be a fugitive of the law, forever afraid of its long arm and its punishments and ultimately becoming a slave in this free society of your own volition.

Conversely, poverty does not constitute enslavement or deprivation, it merely represents a restriction of one’s opportunities and means. However, it does not deprive you of that one priceless and most lucrative of all gifts available to us all- RICH and POOR. FREE EDUCATION, which makes us all rich by the opportunities it affords us.

This is what your forefathers fought and persevered in their pains for. The right to learn to read and write like their masters and fellow human beings. You have that right now earned for you over decades and centuries by those who fought valiantly on your behalf. Let us now see the fruition of those seeds which they sowed and fertilized with their sweat and blood.

Do not aid the ignorant in their delusions. You may say that yours is not the degraded race they take it to be but you have always maintained that, now is the time to show that they who speak such folly are wrong in their conclusions.

And if you wish not to dwell on the past, spare a thought or two for the future. Become something your progeny will look up to with pride, shall venerate and hold in high esteem because you created a past for them to look back on and to reckon with. Do not be of the generation upon which they shall scoff and say ‘THEY WERE FREE’, but what did they do with their FREEDOM?

With these parting words, I hope dear cousin you dwell upon the above and meditate upon them.

Yours

Cousin Junius

Irish Draught Horse – Not Your Typical Draft Horse

The Irish Draught horse is the national horse of Ireland The name Irish Draught may be misleading since the breed is a lighter, more free-moving animal than the traditional image of the heavy draft horse. The Irish Draught is neither as massive nor as heavily feathered as its name implies.

The breed has been in existence for at least a century or more and originated from the Irish Hobby Horse which was a small ambling horse that was similar to the primitive Garrano and Sorraia horses of Northern Spain and Portugal. Clydesdale, Thoroughbred and half-bred sires were used on the local Draught mares in the 1800′s and early 1900′s. Native Connemara Pony was also added to form the breed known as the Irish Draught today.

Traditionally, the Irish Draught Horse was the farm horse in Ireland and so it had to be versatile enough for use as a hunter or ridden or cart pulling and plowing. It had to be docile, strong and economical to keep. The traditional winter feed for the Irish Draught Horse was young gorse put through a chaff-cutter, boiled turnips, and bran or meal of some sort that could be spared from the cattle.

But even for all its usefulness, it has nearly gone extinct on several occasions. During times of poverty and famine in Irish history, many breeders gave up registering their animals and hundreds of Irish Draughts were going to the slaughter houses each week until there were very few left. The conservation status of this equine is considered rare. However, today the Irish Draught is more sought after for its breeding qualities with other equines rather than with itself. In England, brood mares are considered to be excellent dams for the Irish Sport Horse when mated with a Thoroughbred stallion. Now the Irish Draught stallion is being used more and more to get extra bone and substance in the progeny of the lighter type mare.

The Irish Draught Horse Society of North America (IDHS-NA) was established in 1993 to assist in the conservation and appreciation of the Irish Draught Horse and its successful crossbred, the Irish Draught Sport Horse throughout the world. The IDHS-NA maintains the studbooks for qualified Irish Draught and part Irish Draught horses in North America.
On their website can found information regarding the rarity of the breed. The following is a direct quote from “Report to The Irish Draught Horse Society, Ireland” prepared at the Animal Genomics Laboratory, School of Agriculture, Food Science and Veterinary Medicine, College of Life Sciences, University College Dublin, Belfield, Dublin 4, Ireland; by Angela McGahern, Patrick Brophy, David MacHugh & Emmeline Hill and released in February, 2006.

“The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations classifies the Irish Draught (ID) horse as an endangered breed due to the declining population size. Falling purebred numbers, combined with a serious threat of genetic erosion, suggest that the ID population is in urgent need of conservation. Genetic diversity is an important component in the consideration of conservation strategies and measures of genetic diversity are becoming widely used in breed management systems. The Irish Draught Horse Society must now identify and preserve its rare bloodlines and explore the genetic resources available to preserve the broadest possible genetic base.”

In terms of physical characteristics, the Irish Draught Horse stands between 15.1 and 16.3 hands. Any solid color is acceptable, including grays, but white above the knees or hocks is not desirable. The horse has a graceful head and a large kind eye. The neck is set high and carried proudly, showing a good length of rein.

The strong limbs have particularly short cannon bones and despite the power, this equine is free-moving and not ponderous. The feet are like those of a hunter and not like those of a cart horse. The feet are one of the horse’s most important features and they are the reason why the Irish Draught is required for the breeding show jumpers — the feet have to withstand the concussion from jumping, often on hard surfaces.

The traveling action of the breed is smooth without exaggeration and not heavy or ponderous. The walk and trot are straight and true with good hock flexion and shoulder freedom.

It is hoped that the traditional Irish Draught Horse can make a comeback. It has an intelligent and gentle nature and is noted for its docility and common sense, and has a proud bearing, as well as being an important ingredient in the creation of the Irish Draught Sport Horse.

About Horse Saddles And Horse Blankets

Horse saddles and horse blankets are something people usually associate together when the horse comes to mind.  If you plan to ride your horse, you’ll need both.  Even if you don’t have to use the horse blanket with the horse saddle, you’ll still want a horse blanket for other times.  You’ll want one when your horse is kept in a drafty stall, when your horse is waiting out in the cold weather for a show, when your horse is waiting in a holding pen for vet’s attention and it is cold outside.
When you think of buying a new horse saddle, consider the trial period in case you’ll want to return it for a better fit.  Surely you didn’t think it would be as easy as just buying a universal saddle fit for any horse or rider?

No, my unsuspecting horse friend, it is, unfortunately more involved than that.  Oh, but the journey for the proper saddle and blanket is well worth the efforts both for you and your equine partner.  Buying a horse saddle that doesn’t fit the horse, rider, or the occasion will only cause regrets and soreness that could be avoided by a thoughtful purchase.  Ask any horse enthusiast and you’ll find that buying the proper gear is a welcome investment!

You’ll want to consider what type of riding you’ll do.  Saddles are basically wood or fiberglass in frame that is covered with leather.  Although, you’ll find technical advances have allowed for the more modern synthetic material in lieu of the leather covering.  Regardless of what your saddle is constructed of, the quality and purpose and fit are most important.  You’ll want your money’s worth.

There are several different choices to make before purchasing a blanket as well.  You must have a blanket under a western saddle for the horse and rider to be comfortable during the ride.  Blankets are made for performance, for miniature horses, and for show.  Although the Navajo horse blanket is a popular choice is the western style is a consideration, there are others available.  There are quilted blankets, foal blankets, antisweat sheets, and cooling blankets.

For your added comfort, there are softee seats, suede seats, and even shock absorbers, which might be welcomed after a lengthy time away from riding because of medical reasons.  Whatever type of horse saddle or horse blanket you’ll require be certain both will best benefit you and your horse.

The saddle must fit not only the size of the horse, but the size and shape of the rider as well.  A poor fit can cause sure muscles, blisters, and bruising for you both.  Not only should you consider this for yourself, but for children riders.  The child will continue to grow, but the saddle should fit them at their current size.

Saddles used for other than pleasure riding include those bought for endurance, show, roping, barrel races, and ponies.  There are many different brands of all these types of saddles.  It’s a matter of choice, price, and availability.  Happy hunting!

KGS Bikes Fitting Process – How and Why

Many people ask us about our fitting protocols and how we have come to be recognized as one of the best in the world. I wrote this article explaining what we do so one can have a better idea of the depth we go to in order to find an exact position for a rider.

I have studied bicycle fitting for over 25 years and have the expertise and technology to fit bicycles to clients more accurately than was previously possible. I also specialize in fitting people over the age of 40 as well as extremely short and extremely tall individuals. In these years of research, I have studied fitting systems and have discovered the pitfalls of other systems as they relate to the human bicycle rider. While other systems rely on equations and formulas, we are aware of them but place the rider first and create a unique environment for them to develop a unique fitting solution.

At KGS Bikes we have proprietary techniques to help the client become aware of the subtle differences in bike fit. By nature, humans are very adaptive and as such will ride any bike within an acceptable range of sizes. Some people have larger acceptable ranges and some have very small effective ranges.

Our technique is the reverse of traditional fitting systems. We create an environment whereby the rider can perceive small differences in saddle and handlebar placement. This information is used to tell us where to position the saddle and handlebars, making the bike adapt to the client. Because neither I nor the client is restricted by traditional fitting standards and our system is both double-blind and repeatable, which is the basic definition of good science.

KGS protocols include a custom sizing cycle that makes every single interface with the rider easily adjustable – from crank length to saddle height, setback and angle, to handlebar location. The size cycle is equipped with a power meter to accurately determine effort intensity, and repeat the intensity when we change one variable at a time. The variables are changed dynamically so we can quickly determine whether the change is a good one or not. We also use video analysis to help the client see how he or she rides a bike. The video analysis is further used as a biofeedback aid to help retrain a rider’s form. Our fitting system represents the best technology we have found to date.

We follow a strict protocol of fitting processes that begins with an extensive interview and documentation of the client’s current setup and riding style. We then optimize the cleats on their shoes and set up the sizing cycle identical to their current bike (unless serious problems exist that make that impractical). Our system coaxes the client to give us feedback so we can then dynamically adjust the saddle and handlebars to a perfectly fit, unique position.

We realize that riders balance differently on a bicycle based on their size, weight, fitness level and riding style. As one rides faster on a bike, more power is transmitted through the legs pressing on the pedals, ostensibly lifting the torso and changing the balance point. A power meter on the sizing cycle accurately measures how much wattage is created, so that the saddle can be set up at the right height and the correct setback. The setback of the saddle is the primary factor that makes the rider comfortable; conversely, an inaccurate setback distance can cause the rider to have too much hand pressure and/or pubic pressure.

The KGS custom fitting process stabilizes the ankle first, then fully defines the saddle height, all while the rider is performing at their desired pace. The client warms up on the sizing cycle and begins the process of observing his individual riding technique on the monitor, becoming aware of how the body actually feels on the bike. Multiple short sessions prevent the client from premature fatigue, and allow the brain to process all the new information it receives. We build a solid foundation of cleats, ankle and saddle before moving on to handlebars. At the end of the session the client then practices and reinforces the new techniques using our video analysis.

After the correct fit is attained, a cross-hair laser allows us to accurately document the custom setup. The captured data can be applied to the existing bicycle (if the bike can be adjusted to the new dimensions) or can be used to create a new bicycle.

This proprietary fitting technique has earned KGS Bikes a reputation around the world for building bicycles with 100% satisfaction, since the bike is truly an extension of the owner.

Protect Your Horses Back From Pain

Protect Your Horses Back from Pain

I treat 100s of people for back pain. I have trained 100s of riders to ride and protect their body especially their back from pain. I have treated many horses as well for back pain. It is partly for these reasons that I specialize in developing Horse Riding Equipment for riders.

As Horse Riders we give our horses back pain. The causes of back pain in horses can be all or a combination of the following. We use poor fitting saddles that sit low on their back. A saddle can cause pressure points at thewither and any where along the gullet. The padded part of the saddle can become lop sided from a rider leaning to one side. The stirrups are often not equal length because again riders lean to one side; this creates pressure points in the horses back. We use dirty saddle blankets that are coarse against the skin and we often don’t use enough shock absorbing padding under the saddle. Rugs are another cause of back pain in a horse.

The work we do training our horses is a major cause of back pain. Dressage riders spend hours doing circle work, Jump riders can over jump their horses, endurance riders ride for hours. All of this is fine if we respect fitness and flexibility. The long slow process of training muscle length, strength and function as well as obedience in a horse is often neglected because we want results fast. You can buy a clock but you can’t change time. You can’t get a horse fitter by over doing his training. You can’t build strength by doing twice as much. Back pain is the result. Resistance and bad behavior is the effect and misery is the outcome.  Many riders then decide to do more and more and so the cycle continues. Some even go so far to tie their horses down to teach them a lesson.

I’ve seen the above pattern over and over.

I advise every rider to train out of the saddle one to train themselves to ride better and two to respect the effect of hard muscle training has on their own body. I like rider to feel pain and pressure and stiffness and understand they need to treat it and manage it not just do more. Riders who train out of the saddle have so much more respect for their horse.

The use of massage after a training session has such a good bonding as well as therapeutic benefit to your horse. I use acupuncture myself. Feeding electrolytes and of course a balanced feed is essential. If you don’t know what to feed appropriate then go and learn.

Horse riders must learn correct rug and saddle fitting. I will not ride without an air step saddle pad under the saddle or without checking the space between the saddle and the horses back. With an air step saddle pad I know it is clear. I take the stirrups off once a month, hang them on a hook and check they are equal. It is amazing how many aren’t and the rider swears they are.
The second biggest management for a horses back pain is the way a rider rides. A good rider is balanced and strong in the saddle. They don’t bounce and pull and move around so the horse has to catch them all the time. To learn HOW TO ride like this follow my Applied Posture Riding program it will make you a better rider and save your horse from back pain.

Understanding English Bits

A bit is a device placed in a horse’s mouth, kept on a horse’s head by means of a headstall. There are many types, each useful for specific types of riding and training.
The mouthpiece of the bit does not rest on the teeth of the horse, but rather rests on the gums or “bars” of the horse’s mouth in an interdental space behind the front incisors and in front of the back molars. It is important that the style of bit is appropriate to the horse’s needs and is fitted properly for it to function properly and be as comfortable as possible for the horse

While there are literally hundreds of types of bit mouthpieces, bit rings and bit shanks, essentially there are really only two broad categories: direct pressure bits, broadly termed snaffle bit; and leverage bits, usually termed curbs.

Bits that act with direct pressure on the tongue and lips of the bit are in the general category of snaffle bits. Snaffle bits commonly have a single jointed mouthpiece and act with a nutcracker effect on the bars, tongue and occasionally roof of the mouth. However, regardless of mouthpiece, any bit that operates only on direct pressure is a “snaffle” bit.

Leverage bits have shanks coming off the mouthpiece to create leverage that applies pressure to the poll, chin groove and mouth of the horse are in the category of curb bits. Any bit with shanks that works off of leverage is a “curb” bit, regardless of whether the mouthpiece is solid or jointed.

Some combination or hybrid bits combine direct pressure and leverage, such as the Kimblewick  , which adds slight leverage to a two-rein design that resembles a snaffle and the four rein designs such as the single mouthpiece Pelham bitsand the double bridle, which places a curb and a snaffle bit simultaneously in the horse’s mouth.

In the wrong hands even the mildest bit can hurt the horse. Conversely, a very severe bit, in the right hands, can transmit subtle commands that cause no pain to the horse. Bit commands should be given with only the quietest movements of the hands, and much steering and stopping should be done with the legs and seat.
