Size Zero; Do We All Need to be This Thin?
Size zero is an american size that equates to roughly a size 4 in English sizes. On both sides of the atlantic there seems to be this desire to fit into a size zero or equivelent dress. Being size zero doesn’t make us better or more attractive and shopping for that size could be very challenging, as few shops stock such a small size. Size zero is tiny and will not fit most women, however thin they are. Our bone structure will vary according to our genes and the size label of clothes is not necessarily an indication of how fat or heavy you are.
I am sure we are all guilty of having bought something just because the label says it’s a size smaller than we normally buy. Equally we will put something back on the rail, even if it is a perfect fit and looks gorgeous, because the label says it’s a size bigger than we would like to be seen in!
I have a suspicion that some manufacturers have cottoned on to this and are cutting their clothes slightly bigger, to pander to our desire to having a size tag that is lower.
We all know this is ridiculous. You are the only one who knows what size you are wearing and if it bothers you that much, cut the label out! The size of a garment is just there to guide us. Imagine if nothing was labelled and we had to guess the sizes before trying them on. The sizes are there to save us time and rather like when your children’s feet a measured, it’s a starting point. When clothes are mass produced they are cut by machines in large batches. As the cutting tool presses down through all the layers of fabric, the fabric is stretched more at the bottom so even within one batch there will be slight differences in size.
Wearing clothes a size too small will actually make you look bigger. The garment will have creases and folds and give the appearance of lumps and bumps that don’t really exist. Forget what the labels says and shop for something that fits, it is only you that knows what the label says..
