Gentle Horse Training – How To Handle A Horse
Horses are sensitive animals despite their sizes. They can unintentionally hurt people who don’t know how to handle a horse and how to approach them. There are some horses that will let you approach and handle them any way you like, but others are far more picky and might react in a negative manner to an inexperienced handler. Keep in mind that the way riders approach a horse will have a significant impact on the outcome of their meeting. So, it is very important that you understand the correct manner to approach and handle a horse before climbing on its back.

The right way to approach a horse is with good posture. Approaching this animal without confidence and intent will send the message that the rider does not know what he or she is doing. When trying to approach a horse, it is best that the handler walk up to the animal with his shoulders back, eyes up and halter already in his hand. The handler may not necessarily have to make an eye contact with the horse, however, refrain from looking at the ground or deliberately looking away from him.
It is also important on how to handle a horse to keep in mind that when approaching it, the front end is friendly. Walk directly to the horse’s head all the time and if he gives any sign of swiveling, make a wide arc around the horse in order to avoid his back end.
A rider should reach out and slip the halter on as soon as he is within reach of the horse. But then, if a halter is already in place, he has to clip the rope to the halter as quickly as possible in order to avoid a game of chase.
Once a rider is comfortable and knowledgeable on how to handle a horse, then it will become second nature and he will not have to think about it as much. However, it is very important to always remember one’s training and not to slack off because this is when accidents begin to happen.
