green broke horse wont go straight?

i started my friesian/peruvian cross under saddle a few years ago, we didnt know he was gaited at the time so we were using my western saddle and he kept going in tight little circles because he super sensitive and the saddle wasnt letting him move his shoulders freely. now we have a gaited western saddle for him but every time i want him to walk on the rail he trys to go do little circles. if i try to turn him he braces agains my leg and rein.. we are using a hackamore as i do parelli. is there a way to fix this?.. he is fine when we go on a trail ride but he does this in the round pen and arena..the gaited saddle fits fine, we have had a bunch of saddle fitters out and they say they have never seen a saddle fit so good on a horse.

It never was because of a “wrong” saddle. If the saddle was causing pain from a bad fit, it would still take a period of time for the horse to act up (most of the time). It sounds like the horse is tense and NO horse will learn if they are tense and worried about what is being asked of them. First, you have to establish authority and keep it. A horse does not learn or listen to a handler that he doesn’t respect. Second, lunge first and get him tired before you start your training session. A tired horse is a lot more willing to learn and listen. Third, you need to make sure that you use your aids properly and that he also responds properly. For instance: If you are going clockwise in a ring and he drifts away from the fence while you are riding and asking him to travel straight(?), you need to…… First, use your inside(right) leg squeezing actively against his barrel until he responds and moves away from your leg. If he responds by going faster then you allowed him to respond incorrectly by not holding him back when your leg aid was applied. If he avoids your leg aid then he does not understand how he is supposed to respond to it or he is too preoccupied feeling tense to care to listen. You must teach the horse to respond to your aids immediately when the aid is applied. So hold him back with the reins and kick him hard with only the one leg that he avoided. Do this over and over (actively) until he moves his body away from your leg and then quit kicking and reapply the leg aid properly and he should be ready to listen. If you do this every single time he does not respond then he will learn how he is supposed to respond. Make sure you always use the correct leg because if you gave him a punishment kick with the wrong leg then he will not understand what you were asking of him. Eventually soon he will much rather listen to your leg the first time you use it instead of the much harder punishment kick. It is important that you do not ever let the horse run forward when you kick him for punishment because he will (in his head) be running away from the punishment and still think he has the upper hand. After he has learned to move away from you leg aids then you need to keep him straight by maintaining a constant contact with both legs fairly evenly and he will not want to move crookedly into either one of you legs that are against him. If he does then you need to slightly adjust the squeeze of the leg that he is moving into. And again, if he does not listen to your leg then hold him back and give a punishment kick. Most people are afraid to put leg on a horse that is tense or hyper but the truth is that on a horse that is tense it is especially important to keep your legs close to him and touching him slightly. This helps him realize that you are their and it also keeps him from over reacting from a sudden touch (aid). A tense horse is actually comforted by your constant, slight, nice contact from your legs. Then you just have to adjust the amount of contact or squeeze when you aid him to do what you ask. There is no way if he is schooled correctly that you will fail. I ride teach and show professionally and I have a website that you can check out for tips on training. The articles on Authority and Communication parts 1-2 are exactly what you need to read and under stand and apply correctly and your horse will be straight in a flash. I tried to give you a quick explanation in my answer but there is too much information to cover. Check it out at www.equinesportslife.com and feel free to ask me any other questions or problems that you might be having. Training horses is not a job for beginners and you can really mess a horse up permanently if you do not do it right. You are not only learning to stay on but also to learn the language that the horse can comprehend. Most people think that they are training the horse but realistically the horse can only be trained 1 way, the right way, and the horse knows what that is. So it’s the horse that is training you. Good Luck! from Christine
