Emotions Carved In Stones In Khajuraho
Those with a crush on historical monuments and architectural beauty, find the temples of Khajuraho the most beautiful sites. Khajuraho, situated in the state of Madhya Pradesh, is frequented for its beautiful temples and erotic sculptures. Architectural Beauty
Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, Khajuraho temples were built in around 1000 AD by Chandravarman, the founder of Chandela dynasty. The temples completed thousand years of their existence in 1999. The architectural pattern is purely the north Indian Nagara style and the stones are carved out beautifully to showcase spiritual and physical love. Apart from eroticism, these sculptures also depict art forms regarding traditional Indian music and dance. Most of the sculptures belong to Gods, deities and the day to day activities of people in that era.
Built according to the typical Hindu architectural pattern, the main temple complex consists of an entrance porch (ardhamandap), a vestibule (antarala) and a sanctum sanctorum (garbhagriha). The temples are divided into three groups:

The Western Group (the largest, compact and centrally located; includes some of the most prominent monuments)

The Eastern Group (comprising five detached sub-groups in and around the present village of Khajuraho), and
-
The Southern Group (about a kilometre south of the Khajuraho village).
Kandariya Mahadeo Temple, Chaunsat Yogini Temple, Vishwanath Temple, Lakshamana Temple, Parsvanath Temple, Ghantai Temple, Adinatha Temple, Duladeo Temple and Chaturbhuj Temple are a few of the finest temples of Khajuraho.
It is believed that initially there were around 85 temples, out of which stand only 22 retaining their age old glory. The temples are decorated beautifully during the prestigious 7-day Khajuraho Dance Festival. The best time to visit the temples is after the monsoon when the dust is subsided and the beauty of the temples is increased two folds after getting cleaned by the rain.
