Isn’t putting a large, gilt-edge, leather bound Bible on a really ornate pulpit or lectern…well, idolatry?
I’ve read several questions about Catholics and statues and is that idolatry, but I’ve been to quite a few Protestant and evangelical churches that displayed the Bible in such ostentatious ways that it could only be called veneration.
Read your second commandment. To make an image of any thing that is on the Earth, in the Heavens, or in the waters and bow yourself down before that image to worship it is the Biblical definition of idolatry. The Bible isn’t made in the image of anything, nor do we bow ourselves down to worship it. The closest you’ll get is the Catholic Tradition of the priest bowing before his Bible and kissing it, but even this falls short of actual idolatry. To venerate something merely means to hold it in high esteem or count something as worthy of respect…a far cry from actual worship.
