The Black and White Wedding: Elegant, Cosmopolitan, Au Courant
Nothing says elegant, sophisticated, and brilliantly understated like the black and white wedding.
Of course, in order to keep the black and white wedding from looking like a funeral, the whole package requires some careful planning and thoughtful execution. Moreover, black and white does not imply that everything must remain perfectly colour-free; instead, it suggests that the black and white theme demands careful, strategic accenting…preferably in pink at twilight or red for an evening affair.
Pick Perfect Accents
Staging your black and white wedding at twilight, you enhance the romance of the occasion, and you keep the wardrobe requirements extremely simple. The fundamental principle of elegance applies, demanding just enough of just the right stuff. The groomsmen wear either black three-piece suits or simple black tuxedoes, and the bridesmaids wear elegant little black dresses—cocktail length is perfectly acceptable. As always, the bridesmaids feel profoundly grateful that you have chosen dresses they either already own or may wear again, and the groomsmen feel equally grateful that you have not dressed-them up in some outrageous get-up that makes them feel like ornaments on wedding cakes. Ask the bridesmaids to accessorize only with pearls; tell the groomsmen that the rules prohibit bling of all descriptions. Keep the lighting low. Maximize the candlelight.
Staging your black and white wedding after dark, you upgrade everything to an evening affair. The upgrade has little or no consequence for the bridal party’s attire, except that the bridesmaid’s gowns now must be long. You still must adhere to the basic rule of elegance, keeping everything simple and understated.
Pink at twilight; red in the evening. The basic rules of strategic accenting remain unchanged. The accent colours appear in the flowers, the ribbons that hold the flowers, the groomsmen’s ties, and if you dare to be edgy, the bride’s shoes. Carrying the theme from ceremony to reception, you keep your table setting perfectly white, using the accent colour in your centrepieces and the champagne flutes or the wine glasses. To stay perfectly within the guidelines of your theme, you will serve rose wine for your twilight wedding accented in pink, a robust merlot for your evening wedding accented in red. Perfecting the theme, you would serve a pink meat at the dinner after the twilight wedding; pork or lamb can be prepared tastefully for the occasion, but you must offer a vegetarian alternative. Of course, the red accents demand beef, the heartier the better so long as it is cooked to perfection.
The organic touch in the black and white wedding
Extravagant wrapping paper is a product of the 1950′s, and it is generally considered a monument to needless extravagance, more or less like exaggerated fins on your father’s Buick. Not old school just obsolete. Have your black and white wedding restore the Victorian era custom of wrapping gifts in newspaper and securing them with grosgrain ribbons—your signature pink or red, of course. The newspaper recycles, and the ribbon is infinitely reusable. The request also, more or less, satisfies the traditional requirement for “something new.”
