I moved into this house 3 years ago. When checking the attic I found black charred wood in the attic with 2×4′s holding the roof up. When it is windy or damp outside it filters into the house. My allergies are driving me crazy. How can I check it?
What does it smell like? It is musty or is it the smell of burned wood? Typically after a fire, the smell remains for a long time. Fire restoration companies can assess the condition and remedy with an encapsulant and odor control measures.
If there is mold present, which I suspect there is not, a mold inspector should be called. You can usually expect mold if there is a musty smell. Mold can certainly make allergy symptoms worse and cause other adverse health effects. Visit

I’ve been riding for 5 year now and I’ve had two helmets. I bought my second, the Troxel Spirit, and since then (a year and a half ago), I’ve had my share of falls. Yesterday I had my worst, where my horse slipped and fell on top of me. I hit my head on the ground hard, and ended up with a mild concussion. It’s probably a good idea for me to replace my helmet right? If so, what is a good kind for eventing (one that isn’t too expensive)?
By the way, I’m not cutting corners. I just don’t want to spend $300 on a helmet that I will have to replace after one fall. Thanks.
Whenever you fall hit your head, drop your helmet, or otherwise hit it hard, it needs to be replaced. Even if it looks fine, there’s probably structural damage you can’t see underneath the surface making it unsafe.
If you got a concussion with the helmet on, the helmet definitely got damaged! Don’t ride in it again, riding with a damaged helmet is just as dangerous as riding without a helmet.
Any approved helmet will be fine for endurance riding.
See if Troxel will give you a discount on your next helmet. Most helmet companies allow you do get a discount on your next helmet if you return a damaged one of the same brand. This is because they want to keep their customers.

My head has a circumference of 24″, but the height of the helmet is the main problem.

I really strongly suggest that you go in and try on the helmets by the various manufacturers. Each one makes helmets that seem to fit a particular shaped head. There are a couple of companies helmets I cannot wear… they just plain hurt to put on. For me, Giro makes the helmet that feels the most comfortable for me.
So for you it sounds as if you have two issues helmet height, and head shape to deal with. A helmet that seems to have tons of volume is Uvex helmets, and certain helmets made by specialized might fit your needs as well. Both are terific companies. I like the retention system of the Uvex much more than the Specialized brand.
