Arm-pump-aholic Anonymous Compares Stick With Weight to Gripstik for Wrist Exercise

Fast By Design Product Review: Canadian Motocross Company

‘Welcome to Fast by Design’s first AA meeting (Armpumpaholic Anonymous). My name is Smitty and I am an Armpumpaholic. They say the first step to rehabilitation is admitting you have the problem. Well since I am the only one here I will now stand up and say “I GET ARM PUMP”.

Whew! Now with that over, lets diagnose the scenario. If you are like me and have a daytime gig, you probably practice around twice a week and race on the weekends. Although you do everything you can during your motos, breath steady and avoid “Death Grip”, you still have the Arm Pump monkey on your back. Well friends I have great news! The FbD test department received an interesting little package about a month ago from Gripstik. Inside was a curious looking apparatus that resembled two motocross grips glued together at their ends. I know what you are thinking, “Another wonder product that will fall short of what I need to help me kick the arm pump habit”.

The first step to dropping arm pump is to ride as much as possible. If you don’t put in some track time during the week, arm pump is inevitable. If you don’t get it you are: A) not pushing hard enough. or B) a freak of nature. Once you are able to ride at least twice a week you will probably notice a reduction in arm pump. The next step is to work on the forearms during the other days.

Freddie Spencer, a multi-time road racing champion and dirt bike rider, suggests a broomstick handle, a piece of string and a 5 pound weight. You attach the weight to one end of the string and the broomstick to the other. Holding the broomstick you wind the string up raising and lowering the weight. This technique works great and from personal experience I found it helped reduce arm pump more than any other single exercise. Gripstik has taken the winding with resistance motion but removed the string and weight. Thus creating the unit we described earlier, the two grips actually twist against each other with variable force. The resistance can be adjusted by simply rotating one grip closer to or farther away from the other grip.

The Gripstik unit is very compact, in fact small enough to fit in the glove compartment of you vehicle, where mine is most commonly found. The reason for this is I usually use mine a couple times through the day. When driving to work in the morning I hit allot of stop lights, so instead of just sitting at the light staring ahead at the car in font of me, I do a one minute moto in my van. With about ten sets of lights on my daily commute I get a pretty good forearm work out. The second use is before I practice. After getting into my gear I like to stretch a bit before jumping on the bike. Between stretches I will do about 50 reps of the Gripstik to warm up the forearms.

I can honestly say that I have gotten the arm pump problem down to a manageable level. Between weekly riding and the daily use of the Gripstik I can run a 20 min moto flat out at most of my local tracks, something that was just a pipe dream last year.’

Here is a list of some satisfied customers who use the Gripstik Wrist Exerciser:

Synthetic Motor Oils Are Environmentally Friendly

The burning of fossil fuels for an automobile’s energy creates many terrible side effects for ourselves and our environment. Besides the depletion of these limited resources, harmful emissions are subsequently released into the environment. The exhaust gases released from automobiles account for almost three quarters of the nitrogen oxides and over half of the reactive hydrocarbons released into our constantly depleting ozone. This is the leading cause of global warming. Air pollution has also been estimated as the cause of approximately 30,000 deaths in the United States each year alone. When considering the cities with the dirtiest air, one U.S. study revealed a mortality rate 17-26% higher than those with the lowest levels of air pollution. Although these statistics are staggering, automobiles are necessary to our way of life and can not be completely removed from our society. One way to considerably lower these harmful emissions and preserve our fossil fuels is to substitute the traditional, petroleum based oils used in our vehicles with synthetic motor oils.

Unlike the conventional oils that are refined from crude oil, a precious limited resource, synthetic motor oils are chemically engineered in a laboratory for their specific purpose. Using synthetic fluids helps decrease natural resources from being depleted for use. They are also more effective than traditional oils by lasting longer and withstanding engine stresses better between drain intervals. This means that drain intervals can be extended, and less waste oil is accumulated over time. Synthetic oils are infused with additives and detergents that keep engines running cleaner and smoother. Traditional oils burn off faster and leave behind harmful byproducts or hydrocarbons in the form of deposits inside engines. These harmful byproducts produce more harmful emissions which are released into the environment when burned. These deposits also create more unnecessary engine wear which lowers engine performance and longevity.

On the other hand, synthetic motor oils improve engine performance which increases fuel economy and lengthens vehicle life. This means that less fuel is burned and less fossil fuels are depleted over an engine’s lifespan. Less fuel being burned over time translates into less harmful exhaust emissions being released into the environment. Using synthetic fluids in other vehicle components such as the transmission or differential also increases engine performance and, therefore, decreases fuel consumption. There are many quality synthetic fluids for all applications on the market today. AMSOIL is one of the foremost experts in synthetic motor oil production and produces quality synthetic fluids and additives for every vehicle component, as well. This theoretically means that everyone could stop using oils created from our natural resources in their vehicles altogether. If more consumers would consider using synthetic fluids in their vehicles rather than petroleum based oils, the environment would be that much the better for it.

Automobile exhaust gases are without question the biggest cause of air pollution in the world today. It is the leading cause of global warming due to ozone depletion, and studies have shown remarkable correlations between air pollution and human illness or death. The use of synthetic motor oils rather than conventional, petroleum based oils greatly decreases the level of harmful emissions created by our vehicles.

Keeping Your Saddle In Good Condition

If you are an ardent horseback rider, and then you know that one of the most significant things that you need to do is keep the parts of a western saddle in good working order. Not concentrating to the details can be a matter of life or death, or at least a particularly bad injury. Horseback riders can tell you that there enough things to worry about that can spook your pony and can end up in you losing your seat.

With the news bringing you stories of folks that have had bad falls from riding horses, more folks are hearing about what can occur. Especially when a few of these stories have the names of famous folks attached to them. Thanks to the media, we all know that you can have a fall from a pony that lead to a devastating spine injury.

Source of this article: Keeping Your Saddle In Good Condition

We need to learn from this. It’s necessary to focus on details that can make a contribution in how your ride is going to be. Not taking care of your parts of a western saddle should not ever be one of them. It is reckless and absolutely avoidable. This does not mean you give the saddle a fast cursory peek and say it’s good. All straps and ties should be tested for wear. You should see if you can tear the leather. If you can, it has to get replaced before you employ it again.

You must keep all the parts of a western saddle clean. When you have finished riding, you must take some time to be sure you clean all dust, dust and moisture that may be on the saddle. Some of the saddle parts can become dry and fragile. This can take away from the integrity of the leather and it can wear out. Not accepting this responsibility can end up in you having an accident.

It only takes a little bit of your time, but it can save everyone a lifetime of regrets knowing that you might have prevented what has happened to you if something was to happen to you.

You can find more information about Western saddle at http://www.goarticles.com/cgi-bin/showa.cgi?C=2105894, where you can read about parts of Western saddle.

Split reins… pros and cons? Tips?

I personally despise split reins. I’ve always been using barrel or roper reins, and whenever I have to ride with split reins, I feel I become a worse rider. I feel like I have less control and less contact with the horse’s mouth no matter how tightly I keep the reins.

So I’d like to here your opinions, pros and cons, and if you could, some tips on using split reins.
So far from the answers and my own thinking this is what I’ve figured. I still need some opinions of people who like split reins.
Pros:
-Western Pleasure look.
-Easier to use a martingale with.
Cons:
-Bothers the horse when it hits their sides.
-If too long the horse can trip over them.
-Very little contact with the horse.
-One always seems to be longer than the other.
-Easier to drop and loose.
Pros:
-Easier to neck rein with (some people think).
Pros:
-Less contact with the mouth, better in shows.
Still, I don’t have any tips for using them. If you could add some please…

Split reins are like every other piece of equipment – they take time to get used to.
Pros – 1)you can easily adjust the length of them for various horses by simply moving your hands. I have some large, long low neck carriage horses and most roper reins are too short for them.
2)You can show with them – roper reins are not legal in WP or equitation classes.
3)You can use the end to spank a young horse on the butt if he needs a tap, similiar to how you’d use a crop.
4)You can easily take them up and down, they give you extra length when leading a goofy horse or going through a tough spot such as a narrow gate.
5)You can hold them various ways depending on the style you’re riding. If you are neck reining they are held in one hand and the drape falls over the same side of the neck as the hand you’re using. You can also use the same reins for direct reining with a snaffle bit.
6)The extra length means you can still hold the rein when mounting without pulling on your horse’s mouth. This can be tough with a large horse and a smaller roper rein. The extra length makes it easy to get a nice drape in the rein, it doesn’t have to be carried snug.
7)If one is broken you don’t have to replace both reins. And if they break close to either end you can mend them and the length will still allow them to be usable.
8)They should not cause you to struggle with control of your horse. You simply need to practice moving your hand up and down the rein. If you stick to it for a week or two you can become very sensative and find it much easier to adjust than you do now.
Disadvantages
1)They can be dropped if the horse stumbles or somehow pulls the reins from your hands. Alot of that can be prevented if you keep the reins crossed over their neck when riding two handed, that way if you do drop a rein its normally caught by the neck. If a youth is riding I suggest they tie a knot in the end so they are fastened together.
2)Sometimes you will have a pair that’s too long, especially for a particular horse. If they are so long they drape almost to the ground, then get in there and shorten them! A pair of sharp scissors can do a fine job through most leather.
3)They don’t work for roping or other jobs where you need your hands free at times.
I think you certainly can use either style of reins without any problems. But if you do decide that split reins are worth a try, then be aware that it will take a while before you become used to them. With time and practice they will become second nature to you.

What Should a Foal Know?

When your foal arrives, it can be hard to imagine that there is a lot that you can do with him. However, a lot of the most important training in a horse’s life happens before he turns a year old.

Much of this training ideally should happen before he is weaned. Unfortunately, a lot of young horses do not get enough handling while still with their dam, and arrive at their new homes as weanlings with very little education.

Because horses grow so quickly, a lot of their life’s lessons need to be taught while you are still bigger and stronger than they are. This does not mean that you need to rough them around, but instead means that they must truly believe that you are the one in charge of the situation. By weaning, many horses are already big enough to be very difficult to handle, so the sooner your teach them, the easier it is in the long run.

By weaning a foal should know how to be haltered and led. He should accept having the halter put on and taken off, without resisting, and lead calmly with a plain cotton lead. Ideally, he should be friendly and easy to catch, although many weanlings go through a stage where they like to run away and avoid their owners.

A foal should also have been taught to enjoy being groomed. He should stand quietly in his stall while he is brushed and curried over his entire body. While it might be necessary to use a lead rope to keep him from wandering around the stall as you brush, you should avoid tying him as his neck is not yet strong enough to prevent damage should he panic and fall while tied.

By weaning, most babies have had their feet trimmed several times. Your baby should lift his feet when asked, and permit you to hold them long enough to give them a quick pick out. You may need a helper to hold him, as most babies will try to wander away as you pick their feet.

If you can, it is a good idea to introduce your foal to the clippers and horse trailer before he is weaned. The comforting presence of his dam will make the experience less stressful, and will make it easier for him later in life. Don’t overdo it; a quick introduction is usually enough.

As long as your foal has these basics, he will be ready to continue his training once he is weaned. If at all possible, have different people meet him and handle him before he needs to move to a new home. He needs to know that all humans are his friends, not just the ones he knows.

In the meantime, give him lots of time to be a baby. Turn him out as much as possible, and give him friends to grow up with if you can. Horses need to learn how to be horses in addition to learning to be human companions.

Q&a With Fetusfilmsinc

“Filmmaking is basically all we do. It’s our life… pretty much.”

For sheer productivity, nobody can beat FetusFilmsInc. Made up of Justin Benefiel, Andrew Shafer and brothers Aaron and Austin Keeling, this prolific production team has uploaded 27 movies to the site so far. This is remarkable when you consider the fact that they’re all full-time students, and three of them are still attending Lansing High School in northeastern Kansas.

I’m not talking about home movies, either. These are creatively ambitious and imaginative short films that exhibit a sophisticated knowledge of editing and camera techniques, and strike a difficult balance between comedy and horror. While the rest of us are sitting on our hands, these guys are out in the fields, shooting from the hip and racing to get the last shot off before they lose light.

Aaron Keeling wrote and directed several of the films. In this interview, he discusses the challenges of shooting in the Midwest, the influence David Lynch has on Fetus Films and the prospect of attending film school in the fall.

Hey Aaron, Happy New Year. So, how did the four of you start making movies together?

It was kind of a gradual process. Justin met Austin and me in a community theater production about six years ago and we hit it off instantly. It was around that time that my brother and I found our parents’ camera and began tinkering with it, making silly short movies just to pass the time. Justin was interested and we soon became “movie-making friends,” and since then we’ve just… never stopped. We met Andrew about two years ago and he started making some movies with us. Justin moved away, but we’re still really close friends and we all make films on our own as well as together over vacations and such. It’s weird how it happened. Our personalities just sort of clicked.

I think everyone here at Openfilm is impressed by the creative output of Fetus Films and the number of great films you’ve uploaded. How do you stay so productive?

Well, thank you! Um… I guess the reason we’ve been so productive is because filmmaking is basically all we do. It’s our life… pretty much. When we started making movies back when we were in the sixth grade we were just doing it for fun and, to be honest, none of them were really that good. But as time went by we got more serious about our films and pretty soon it became not only a hobby, but also a passion. Now it seems like we never stop making new movies. We’re just always coming up with new ideas and making more shorts: both for school and for fun. We’re really passionate about what we do, and for us, there’s nothing better than working on a new film.

The teachers and students at Lansing High seem very supportive of your work. Could you talk about filming at the school?

Contrary to how it may appear, filming at school isn’t really that fun of an experience. There’re always so many schedules and obstacles to work around and more often than not it turns out to be a pretty stressful situation. But the students and staff couldn’t be better. It’s surprising how supportive and cooperative they are, and we’re never at a shortage of kids and teachers willing to be in our films. It really is great to have such strong support not only from our friends and families, but also from our school.

As a Wichita native, I know how flat and boring the Midwest can be, but the exteriors in your movies are terrific. How do you find good locations, and how are you able to make Kansas look so bright and colorful?

You got it spot on: very flat and very boring. There was a large time span when all we seemed to do was mope around complaining about how we wished we lived somewhere else so that we could have access to “prettier” places to shoot. But when we finally stopped whining and actually looked around, we happened to find quite a few good locations. Plus, some of the movies were filmed in Oklahoma (also flat and boring, from what I hear) when Justin lived there for a short time. I can’t recall how we found each and every location; in fact, most of them seemed to just show up. Some places we weren’t even supposed to film at. In the middle of shooting Mr. Carnival Man some people approached us and let us know that we were on private property and that we weren’t allowed to be there. Fortunately for us, the nice people didn’t care much and let us finish filming (thank you!). And while filming Through the Hole in the Fence, Justin was threatened by a group of rather intimidating people, all sporting shotguns. Good thing for Justin they were nice as well and let him continue filming. As for the bright, vibrant colors, these are usually the result of filters. We’ve been lucky enough to have access to some pretty good cameras and editing software, which have really improved the aesthetics of our work.

Talk about your production arsenal. What do you shoot with and edit on?

Most of our films have been shot with a Sony HDR SR7, but recently we’ve had access to a Canon XHA1 and a Canon XL2 that are amazing. All of our films are edited with a mixture of Ulead Video Studio Pro 8, Adobe Premier Pro CS3, and Final Cut Pro.

Your films have very complex sound design. Talk about why sound is so important.

For our movies, we view the visuals as 49 percent of the final product, and the sound as 51 percent. Sound is a hugely important part of our films, and all movies in general, for that matter. It’s what carries most movies along. If you watched any one of our films with the sound muted, I’m pretty sure you’d lose interest rather quickly. We spend a great deal of time editing the film, but the majority of editing time is spent on the sound. And yes, it is often very complex. We get really excited when editing with sounds: we always look for the weirdest sounds that we can find and then add them in somewhere. It’s a really fun part, but also the hardest. A movie’s feel can completely change based on the sound alone.

Some of your work seems inspired by the films of David Lynch. For example, take this very Lynchian dialogue excerpt from Postmortem:

“You know, there was a bird in my car today.”

“Was it red?”

“No, it was a blue bird.”

“Oh.”

What is it about David Lynch that inspires you, and what are some of your favorite David Lynch films?

I’m glad that you noticed. We happen to really, really like David Lynch. I think what inspires us most about him is the fact that he does what he wants, how he wants, and doesn’t seem to mind if others don’t like it or disagree. He is completely original and his films are unlike anything we’ve ever seen. One of our favorite movies is Mulholland Drive. We love it. It’s so complex, so confusing, and strange, and beautiful all at once. It’s hard to describe. INLAND EMPIRE is up there too, but it’s definitely the Lynch film that we understand the least. We also love Eraserhead and are huge fans of the Twin Peaks series. Some of his earlier short films are also wonderful (The Alphabet and The Grandmother, for example.) He has this really cool way of blending comedy and the bizarre into something completely unique. He’s definitely one of our biggest influences. And there’s actually a strange little story about that bit of dialogue. Austin and I were riding in an Airport bus to be taken back to our car when I overheard the driver discussing with another driver over their walkie-talkies. They were talking about birds. Red birds and blues birds and birds in their cars. We thought it was funny. We thought it was sad. The perfect material for a strange little film.

I think Pop Spoon represents a real step forward for you guys. Talk about how you came up with this character, and how you got Chase Horseman to do the score.

Pop Spoon is actually based on a true story. Sort of. One of Austin’s teachers told the class once that when she was little, she had an imaginary friend named Pop Spoon who looked exactly like her. Austin thought the name was creepy and mentioned it to me and before long, I had written a script and we had made the movie. Of course we embellished the story a bit. I don’t think Austin’s teacher’s imaginary friend was homicidal. We’re really proud of Pop Spoon and we agree that it’s a step forward in our films. I think what really sets it apart from our other movies is Chase Horseman’s score. Chase goes to school with us and has expressed interest in making music for us for quite some time. At the beginning of the school year, Austin, Andrew, and I began working on a full-length movie called I.Q. for our Video Productions Class and we asked Chase to score the film. So he’s been working on that for a while now and recently asked if we had any side projects he could help with. We gave him Pop Spoon and let him do whatever with it and when he brought it back, Austin and I were so excited. We couldn’t be happier with what he did for the film. We plan on working closely with Chase in the future. He’s really great at what he does.

Who would win in a fight: Pop Spoon or the evil Posse dolls?

I think the Posse dolls would win. As cool and creepy as Pop Spoon is, he’s really sensitive at heart. He just wants to be accepted. The Posse dolls, on the other hand, are really mad about what happened to them and they’re going to do whatever it takes to get revenge. While they’re out making lonely girls go crazy, Pop Spoon’s probably sitting in the corner complaining about how no one believes in him. Then again, it could go the other way. That would be an interesting fight indeed.

What does the future hold for Fetus Films?

The immediate future: film school. Justin has already finished the first semester of his freshman year at NYU film school. Austin, Andrew, and I have applied to quite a few film schools including USC, NYU, and UCLA. We plan to learn as much as we can and build our knowledge of cinema arts at these schools in hopes to perhaps “make it” someday. But I think that each of us knows that, in the end, whether we “make it” or not, we’ll continue making movies. Filmmaking is who we are. It’s what we do. And there’s nothing we want more than to make movies for the rest of our lives. We just want to keep doing what we do, and we can’t wait to see what comes next.

The Magic Of Classical Movies – A Complete Review

Undoubtedly the production of the classical movie has got to be one of the finest “inventions” since the stapler. In fact, the classical movie is one which we had the benefit of when we were kids, when at that time there were only three television channels restricted viewing opportunities were given reprieve as Saturday afternoons and Sundays-when Dad wasn’t sucked into The Wide World of Sports -held movies from the times of the past; movies that feature glamour girls and fearless males that had long since passed out of our way of life.

Although there is evidently a clear distinction, between classical movies and classical movies with only classical period elements (music, costumes, storylines, etc.), I would like to address the delight of the classical movie of yesterday and today that does involve only a particular period of history and does, then feature only classical period elements.

Let’s first start with my favorite classical movie of all time, Impromptu. This film portrays a few years in the lives of George Sand, Franz Liszt, Freiderich Chopin, as well as the royal and prosperous people who took the artists in, thus permitting them to compose, write, paint, create…this was in exchange for enjoyable company and entertainment. The focus of the film is Sand, who is obsessed on partnering with Chopin…her aggression as great as his weakness (physical instabilities). In addition the costuming, the music (for sure), the dialogue, and the setting are all as dramatic as the direction, the technique, and the delivery of words and emotion. What’s more there is even a theme or two that every person from the beginning of time until now can identify with or appreciate- the love/hate, good/evil and longing/belonging motifs that are as classic as the film itself.

There are other classical movie choices that I enjoy, and these are also the more marginal (or less mainstream popular) ones. I personally find Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle (though evidently POST-classical periods), Wilde, and Jefferson, for example, as creditable of classical movie acclaim as Amadeus, Emma, The Piano, and any number of Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson brilliant [re-]productions.

When you think classical movie, what comes to your mind? For some, may think black and white, or big powdered wigs or perhaps maybe classical music? Do you often think about fanciful dresses and formalities? Or do you think classic movie in terms of it being colossal in popularity? Or just maybe do you consider classic movie is as any individual might determine it-according to appeal, accuracy and aesthetics? As for me, I tend to take in the black and white flicks with the beauties and the beaus, the comedies with the curmudgeons, the histories with the insight into who people were then…like us but with an added je ne sais quoi that we must investigate, discover about, and appreciate in as great a depth and as wide a breadth as we might.

Have Massive Amount Of Data To Store? Use Wd Caviar Black Hard Drives

In earlier times, when computers were not present, all data and information was stored in files. Maintaining files for big enterprises, companies and the government was at that time a very tedious task. If any data was required to be extracted from these files, one would have to manually search for the required file and get the data. Plus, with time, files and papers in it would get torn and damaged. Then, computers came into existence which had hard drives that could store all this data and accessed easily within seconds.

Gradually as business grew, the need for hard drives with larger storage capacity kept on increasing. Many companies started manufacturing hard drives that could store massive amount of data. Out of these hard drives, the drives manufactured by Western Digital Corporation are well known all over the world for their supreme quality and service.

Established in 1970, this company has been delivering hi-quality products consistently for the past 4 decades. Moreover, they provide after-sales service leaving no room for worry. They provide various hard drives such as the WD AV-GP, WDRE3, WD RE4-GP, WD Scorpio black, WD Scorpio blue and many others. Out of all these, the WD Caviar Black hard drive is one of the best.
