3 Tips For Western Horse Pleasure Riding

When one speaks about Western style of riding horses, it refers to a completely different type of riding than the English style. There is different gear and a different set of rules for riding. The most common thing in mind would be trail riding and cowboys. In actuality, it refers to many and diverse kinds of riding and mounted activities. Basically, western riding is anything that is done with western tack.

One of the most popular classes within the spectrum of western riding is the western pleasure class. Typically, it is for beginners to the show ring or trail riding. It will provide the beginners experience and control over themselves in a show or trail scenario.

The requirements for competitive western pleasure classes vary somewhat depending on the governing competitive association and on the breed of horse involved, it also varies depending on what you want to accomplish with your mount. Generally speaking, a western pleasure class is judged primarily on the horse’s ability to deliver a pleasurable ride through his responsiveness, attitude, and way of moving. You are in control of how your horse moves, and are responsible for providing the proper pleasure riding training for your horse.

In contrast to events like reining, western riding, trail, and others, in a pleasure class the contestant is not alone in the show ring. He or she can “hide” among a group of other competitors and is not judged individually.

Here are Three Essential Horse Tips for Western Pleasure Riding:

Tip No. 1 – The horse must be well disciplined

In pleasure riding, the horse’s demeanor is very important. You must be able to show that your horse is consistent with his behavior. Some horses change their attitude instantly once they enter the arena. They may get overly excited or unruly with other animals.

It is very important to train and control your horse’s behavior. He should be prepared and make sure that nothing will be new to him once the competition has initiated. In your training, simulation is very important. A horse that is trained with similar stimuli will not be bothered by the unknown simply because nothing is scary anymore. Since western pleasure riding is not extremely physical on your horse for the most part, attitude and demeanor is paramount. The process of desensitizing can be referred to as such, or sacking.

Tip No. 2 – Create an excellent connection with your horse

To win in pleasure riding, you must display that you and the horse are communicating flawlessly. As a rider, you must show that you are in control at all times and that your horse is always willing. Only time in the saddle, mixed with knowledge, will create success in this area. On the trail, enjoyment and safety of both the mount and rider should be the only concerns.

Riding with confidence is vital. Judges will try to examine you in many ways to determine if you are having difficulty with the activity or it is just a walk in the park for you. You need to hide your cues. Judges must not be able to detect your commands. This is the primary way of judging your performance. The more visible your cues are, the less your chances of winning the show. Your horse can also pick up on your every emotion. Realize the horse feeds off your energy and keep it positive and uplifting.

Tip No. 3 – Enjoy and show that you are having fun

It is not called Pleasure Riding for just any reason. Make sure that you express your pleasure while riding the horse, whether on the trail or in the ring. Judges love smiles and controlled enthusiasm. Your happy attitude could be difference between winning and losing.

Remember in pleasure riding – attitude, horse’s responsiveness, and the execution of movements are what count the most. Horse Color Genetics – What About Bays? (Part 2)

If you read the first part of this article you will now be familiar with the basics of color genetics in horses. To quickly review things, there are two basic color genes, the black (B) and the red (b). All horses have a combination of these two genes. All other colors are created by special genes called modifiers.

Before we get started you need to understand some basic terms. The first thing you need to know is that dominant genes will always show their traits while recessive genes are silent when combined with a dominant gene. So a horse with one dominant color gene (B) and one recessive color gene (b) will always show the dominant trait which is black. Another important term to understand is homozygous. This means that the horse carries two copies of the same color gene. For example a chestnut horse (bb) must carry two copies of the red gene or it would not be chestnut. The complimentary term is heterozygous. This means that the horse carries one dominant copy of the gene and one recessive copy of the gene (Bb). The dominant gene will show, but the recessive gene can crop up when crossed to another horse who carries that recessive gene.

The purpose of a modifier is to modify, or change, the outcome of a basic color gene. For example, the most common modifier is the agouti gene. This special gene causes the black in a horse’s coat to lighten making it brown in color. On the other hand it does not affect the black on the points including the mane, tail and legs. If you have this pictured in your mind you will quickly see that the agouti gene is what makes horses bay in color.

So how does the agouti gene work? To make things simple let’s call the agouti gene (A). If a horse is black in base color (Bb) or (BB) and carries the agouti modifier it will be a bay (BbA) or (BBA). If it does not carry the agouti modifier it will remain black. Let’s look at this in a breeding scenario. Let’s take a bay stallion who is homozygous for the black gene (BB) but is heterozygous for agouti (A) and cross him with a black mare who is homozygous for the black gene (BB).

The stallion will only pass on his agouti gene half of the time, making half his foals from the black mare bays. The other half of the time the foal will not get the black gene and will turn out black.

Now the agouti gene is very common. This is why you do not see very many black horses. In addition to this, the agouti gene is also present in chestnut horses, but because they do not have any black it does not express itself. So you can have a chestnut mare who carries two agouti genes (homozygous) and breed her to a black stallion and wind up with only bay foals.

How do you know if your chestnut horse carries the agouti gene? This can be hard to tell without doing genetic testing. Really the only other way would be to breed her to a black stallion and see if she throws a bay foal. Even one bay foal from a black stallion means that she carries an agouti gene. Because the agouti gene is dominant all foals who carry the gene with the black gene will be bays.

HOME COOKING: Top Recipes From Red Lobster, Olive Garden, Cracker Barrel’s & Ruby Tuesday’s That You Can Cook At Home – Restaurant Recipes for Home

If you are like me, you love to dine out and enjoy dinner at a fine restaurant.

The aroma of food, dishes clanging in the background, a relaxed casual atmosphere. As you look into the kitchen you see the flames rising from the pans, chefs making the plates look like just right. Friend and family at our table talking about the days events. Remembering the great times had in the past. These moments are a treasure in our hearts.

That is, until the bill comes. You can’t get out of a fine dinning restaurant for under $100 theses days. And that’s just for two, don’t even think of bringing the kids without cashing your paycheck first. The high cost of eating out limits these times to only special occasions.

Have you tried to reenact the same scenario at home only to find the recipes in those other cookbook don’t even come close to the tantalizing taste in the restaurant. What if you could get a hold of those recipes?

I’ve been a pro cook for over 30 years. And I’ve gathered thousands of recipes…

Here’s a Chef’s Secret: we’ve been using the Great Restaurant Recipes for years, both in restaurant kitchens — and at home.

From Applebee’s Tequila Lime Chicken to Starbuck’s Espresso Truffles — from KFC Chicken to Cheesecake Factory cheesecake — from Apricot Chicken Drumsticks to Fish Fingers to Baked Ziti — we use ‘em all.  Maybe you are cooking this special meal for family.  Or friends.  Or that date you met on WUVING.com – no matter who your guests are — they’ll love it.

Here are 5 of my favourite — and most popular recipes:

 

–Olive Garden Fried Mozzarella–

1 pound block of mozzarella cheese

2 eggs, beaten

1/4 cup water

1 1/2 cups Italian bread crumbs

1/2 teaspoon granulated garlic

1/2 teaspoon dried oregano

1/2 teaspoon dried basil

2/3 cup flour

1/3 cup corn starch

 

Slice the block of cheese lengthwise into about 1/2 inch sections. Cut each section in half.

Beat the eggs with water and set aside. Mix the bread crumbs, garlic, oregano, and basil and set aside. Blend the flour with corn starch and set aside.

Heat vegetable oil for deep frying to 350F. Dip cheese in flour then in egg wash and then coat with bread crumbs. Place carefully in hot oil and fry until golden brown. This should only take a matter of seconds, so you need to watch them closely.

Drain on brown paper bags and serve with your favorite pasta sauce that has been warmed.

 

 –Red Lobster’s Crab Stuffed Mushrooms–

 1 pound fresh mushrooms, approximately 35-40

1/4 cup celery, finely chopped

2 tablespoons onion, finely chopped

2 tablespoons red bell pepper, finely chopped

1/2 pound crab claw meat

2 cups oyster crackers crushed

1/2 cup cheddar cheese, shredded

1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

1/2 teaspoon Old Bay Seasoning

1/4 teaspoon black pepper, ground

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 egg

1/2 cup water

6 white cheddar cheese, slices

 

1) Preheat oven to 400 degrees

2) Saute celery, onion, and pepper in butter for 2 minutes, transfer to a plate and cool in the refrigerator

3) While vegetables cool, wash mushrooms and remove stems

4) Set caps to the side and finely chop half of the stems. Discard the other half of the stems or use elsewhere

5) Combine the sauteed vegetables, chopped mushroom stems, and all other ingredients (except cheese slices) and mix well

6) Place mushroom caps in individual buttered casseroles or baking dishes (about 6 caps each)

7) Spoon 1 teaspoon of stuffing into each mushroom

Cover with sliced cheese

9) Bake in oven for 12-15 minutes until cheese is lightly browned.

 

–Ruby Tuesday’s Chicken Quesadillas–

5 oz. chicken breast

Italian Dressing

12 inch flour tortilla

margarine

1 cup shredded monterey jack/cheddar cheese

1 Tablespoon tomatoes, diced

1 Tablespoon jalapeno peppers, diced

Cajun Seasoning (to taste)

1/2 cup shredded lettuce

1/4 cup diced tomatoes

Sour Cream

Salsa

 

Place chicken breast in a bowl with enough Italian dressing to coat; allow to marinate 30 minutes, refrigerated. Grill marinated chicken until done in a lightly oiled pan. Cut into 3/4″ pieces and set aside.

Brush one side of tortilla with margarine and place in frying pan over medium heat. On one half of tortilla, add cheese,

1 Tbls. tomatoes, peppers, and Cajun seasoning in that order.

Make sure to spread to the edge of the half. Top with diced chicken, fold empty tortilla side on top, and flip over in pan so that cheese is on top of chicken. Cook until very warm throughout.

Remove from pan to serving plate and cut into six equal wedges on one side of plate. On the other side put lettuce, topped with 1/4 cup tomatoes, and then topped with sour cream.

Serve your favorite salsa in a small bowl on the side.

 

–Cracker Barrel’s Hashbrown Casserole–

2 lbs. frozen hashbrowns

1/2 cup melted butter

1 can cream of chicken soup

1/2 cup chopped onion

2 cups grated cheddar

1 tsp. salt

1/4 tsp. pepper

2 cups crushed cornflakes

1/4 cup melted butter

DEFROST hashbrowns.
COMBINE next 7 ingr. and mix with hashbrowns.
PUT all in a 3 qt. casserole.
SAUTE cornflakes in butter and sprinkle on top.
COVER and BAKE at 350 for about 40 min.

 

>> And for Dessert…

 

–Cracker Barrel’s Cherry Chocolate Cobbler–

1-1/2 cups flour

1/2 cups sugar

2 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 cups butter

1 (6 oz.) pkg. Nestle’s semi-sweet chocolate morsels

1 egg

1 (21 oz.) can cherry pie filling

1/2 cups nuts, finely chopped

Preheat oven to 350F. In large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking
powder, salt and butter; cut with pastry blender until crumbs are
size of large peas. Melt over hot (not boiling) water, Nestle’s
semi-sweet chocolate morsels. Remove from heat and cool slightly
at room temperature (about 5 minutes).

Add milk and egg to melted chocolate and mix well. Blend chocolate into flour mixture.

Spread cherry pie filling in bottom of 2 quart casserole. Drop chocolate
batter randomly over cherries. Sprinkle with chopped nuts.
Bake at 350 F for 40 – 45 minutes. Serve warm with heavy cream.

What is the Difference in a Trail Riding Horse Saddle and a Barrel Racing Saddle?

My Niece is interested in barrel racing but first needs to learn to ride, will she need to separate Saddles or can her mom just buy the Barrel racing one and use it for both trail and Barrel? If separate ones are needed please explain the major difference so I can let my sister know why two saddles are needed. Thanks.

The major difference between barrel saddles and trail saddles are the seats. Barrel saddles have deeper seats, and bigger horns and are lighter. That way when you make a sharp turn you can lean back in a sense.
Trail saddles are heavier.
Just because you do trail riding doesn’t mean you have to use a trail saddle, any saddle can work.
Same thing for barrel racing.
One saddle can do fine. There are a wide variety of seats to choose from, so I’d go to a tack store and sit in different saddles to see which one you will like. Remember you will be using the saddle a lot, you want to be comfortable in the saddle and you want the saddle to fit your horse.
